How's Rice's reputation internationally? I'm an international student from Korea and I'll be starting my career in Korea after college; therefore, I want to know how much respect Rice commands internationally, especially in Korea.
Thanks!

Many of us on CC live in the States, so it’s close to impossible for us to know how Rice is perceived in Korea. If I were you, I would contact the university and try to learn how strong their ties are to Asia, if they have joint research programs or other types of collaboration, how many Rice graduates are from Korea and/or go to Korea after graduation, etc. And definitely ask around in your own country. Good luck!

Thanks! that actually helped a lot. I asked the Rice undergraduate admissions for the details that you have mentioned and hopefully they can get back at me as soon as possible. Well, any other opinions people?

idk if this helps much but I have friends in China who attend one of the top boarding schools in that country; when i told them i got into rice all of them immediately recognized the school’s name

…and many more!

Honestly, very few universities are known outside the United States as household names besides Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Yale, and MIT. Sure, some people will know a few more like Rice, UChicago, Duke, Penn, Dartmouth, Vanderbilt, to name a few (and I know I’m excluding a lot there) but the vast majority of people are simply not too familiar with American schools.

And American students may dispute this but try thinking yourself, how many foreign schools do you know? (Try counting to four, past Oxford and Cambridge and maybe even McGill if you’re “really aware”)

Basically, I do not think Rice has a very strong recognition among laymen abroad, but I do not think very many universities do, period.

FWIW, very few people in NY have heard of Rice.

Thank you for contributing such an insightful statement to a thread on Rice’s international reputation. We don’t need to beat a dead horse about how unfamiliar Rice is to the average Joe Schmo on the street in America.

K thanks.

Besides - if you’re from Korea and want to work in Korea, why not go to a Korean university? You’ll definitely score recognition points with that strategy, no?

Generally speaking, other than HYPSM, I’d say UC Berkeley has very solid international reputation, followed by UCLA and Michigan. And then of course you have Oxbridge and other international universities.

Emory is probably very well known in Korea, as it has a disproportionate number of Korean students.

Rice still has a great reputation in NY. It is not true that very few people have heard of Rice, nearly everyone I know has heard of it. Everyone in my high school knows of the calibur of students Rice accepts, and those that attend. To those people who know of universities, Rice will always be a familiar name. But it is true that it doesn’t have the same name recognition as other local Northeastern schools such as BU or Cooper Union.

I’m from Korea, too, and I can tell you that Rice is fairly well-known there (I live in a different country now) - more than most of people think.

To me it seems that a significant number of average people have heard about Rice, but most don’t really understand how prestigious the university is.

Anyone else get this impression?

Probably because the acceptance rate is still 20%.

If the same size applicant pool as its peers applied to Rice, the rate would be closer to 10% and the ‘how hard it is to get in’ factor would level up.

The main reason people tend to neglect how prestigious the school is is I think that the school’s name isn’t as appealing as, for example, Harvard or Princeton.

wait,
from the letter i got from rice, i understand that this year’s acceptance rate was 8%

is this wrong?

Rice accepts more people than they have spots for (they usually accept 2600 I think) since they know that not everyone that is admitted will attend.

By the way, this is true for all colleges… all colleges accept more than the number of seats available because not everyone admitted is going to attend.

^Yeah. When I visited for Owl Days I remember the Dean saying that this year’s acceptance rate was 20%.

i’d say more people know about rice than vanderbilt and emory. THey’re all ranked 17th on US news. so… and… i’m from hong kong. at least that’s what my friends in hk who have never been out of hk say.
