How's Rice's reputation internationally? I'm an international student from Korea and I'll be starting my career in Korea after college; therefore, I want to know how much respect Rice commands internationally, especially in Korea.
Thanks!

I would say that the people who are knowledgeable about US colleges will respect rice, and it has a very good reputation. However, the average guy in asia will probably only know harvard, yale, stanford, and MAYBE princeton. therefore any school below that will not make a big difference.
Some may also refer directly to USNWR (which is stupid), and determine how “good” the school is that way. Rice is ranked a tier 1 school at 17th, which is very very good.

^ Although that may seem pretty bad too. In countries where a college with a ranking bellow ten or fifteen is consider bad, it would be hard to appreciate how good top tier schools can be. When I told others that I’m not applying to the Ivies, I was asked why I’d go abroad to study in “bad” colleges.

Hmm these comments are definitely true. I get the same feeling that the average person in Korea will look at all the tier 1 schools the same except harvard, yale, and stanford. Well, do any of you know how networking is among Rice undergraduates and alums? Networking is vital in the Korean workforce so I would love to know any info concerning this question.

I have graduated from one of the top LAC’s and it’s difficult to find a Korean who would have heard of the college that I graduated from. If you’re referring to networking among Rice undergrad alums, I will have to say it would be almost non-existent in Korea. Most networking among foreign school grads is through folks who went for grad degrees in the US after graduating from colleges here in Korea. I have seen some exceptions like U-Dub and UCLA alums. But again, the interactions I have seen are more like sporadic rather than an organized one.

Most small LACs (even the top ones like Williams Amherst etc) are not heard of outside the US (even outside their states!). I personally find this a waste because they offer superior education to tons of others more well-known schools (which derives their popularity from the virtue of their large student body).
