"...we have a nice house in TX and an apt by the beach in CA, in addition to 4 cars ..."

Yeah, that sucks. May have to let go of one of those cars to help fund college.

eah, that sucks. May have to let go of one of those cars to help fund college.

That would be impossible, but thanks for the advice.

everybody has their priorities :)

Has anyone ever heard of a company called Degree Masters, LLC? They specialize in finding scholarships, grants, loans, etc. for students for a fee of $1500. I would like to talk to someone they have actually helped.

I'm guessing that they mostly help themselves.

if you have to pay 1500 for that.....i should start a business and i could charge you 1000 if you would like ......lol

its a scam

i completely agree with tilos

also my family has about a $100grand income and i def consider it middle class (live in suburbs of chicago)

Location also greatly determines one's spending ability... my parents would love to move to a rural area with a $100grand income.... cuz the subrubs cost so much to live in... especially housing and taxes

and liek tilos said, a middle class family is well off in the sense they can make payments month by month but its hard to save up very much $.... and thus hard for families with this situation pay for college

i did a financial aid calculator on collegeboard and it said that my family should be able to pay forr $20,000 a year and any amount after that financial aid will take care of... i hope this is true otherwise going to a good college could become immensly expensive especially combining it with med school

i agree with coolkash.....where you live determines one's spending ability....
In Chicago homes that would cost a certain amount in Texas, cost about 3 times more in Chicago......and most things cost more in Chicago than Texas....so it all depends

My parents make a combined income of around 65,000 a year, although it varies because they own their own business. I am an only child. Would I have a chance at getting some decent financial aid? What do you think I would get if I applied ED to Brown and got accepted? I hear that they arn't to helpful with financial aid....

oh, and I don't know if this helps/hurts/or makes a difference at all but I am from Hawaii where everything is pretty expensive...avg. house is 500 grand, gas is 3.24, etc....

well gas is quiet expensive everywhere now... last i checked, around here it was like $3.30... and i heard in places like atlanta its up to $5 even $6 due to the hurricane

oh, well of course the hurricane changed everything, but this was way before the storm. and 3.24 is for the bottom gas. the good gas is 3.44, but that doesnt matter....i just want to give everyone an example to show that hawaii is one of the more expensive places to live, even though I know that other places probably charge much more for gas.

well i think, based on your parents income, you would get some good financial aid. my parents make 130k combined, and at my boarding hs, i still get about 75% of my tuition covered by financial aid. but we dont' have a house or valuable assets like that.

Im a little confused.....does "financial aid" include loans.....or is it just grants, scholorships, etc..

but lets say I got into Brown ED.....it would be a MAJOR reach, unless I can really get my scores up...would I still get a good financial aid package? I really haven't heard many good things about their aid program, and it seems like a school that is mostly for the UPPER middle-class.

kbfunkymonkey, financial aid is just the school paying for your tuition. it's not a scholarship or grant. it's just where the school sees that your family's income cannot pay so much tuition, so pays some for you. still, the amount of financial aid you get usually unofficially depends on how much the school "wants you".

my parents have a combined income of something like $75k to $80k with two kids in college, and a grandchild on the way. They did not go to college.....and in the past have had to support two elderly women (my grandmothers). They have had financial problems in the past and have since come out of that but still have a bunch of bills to deal with......after taxes and such, they do not keep much of their money.....int he end, it messes me over because FAFSA says I can pay all of my tuition....reality is that I can't pay it all and am up to my weave tracks in loans. I did not even qualify for work-study!

Bonafide, what is your cost of attendance as calculated by the school?

I was just in a debate with my friend over classes and stuff. She grouped herself and i in the same class-upper middle. We live in the same area (Northern VA-ish) but my fam (combined) makes under 200,000. Her fam (combined) makes over a million. does this make any sense? She says its cuz they done have labels or anything. but neither do we...She just bought a house with the market up while we've had ours for 11 years....I say shes in the upper class. she says shes upper middle. Whos right?
(wow...that seemed like i was writing to dear abby or something)

Your friend is out of her friggin' mind.
