Does anyone know more about this program? What are the usual stats for an admitted applicant? How many students usually apply for this program?

I'm interested in the answer to this as well.

bump!

University of Richmond: Merit-Based Scholarships

Everyone is eligble, but I'm not sure on the stats of students who receive the scholarships.

Hello all--

Everyone who applies by December 15 is eligible for consideration for the program. Last year that was about 3500 students (going from memory so this is a ball park number). About 700-800 semi-finalists were invited to submit additional information to move on in the competition and about 100 were chosen as finalists. They are invited to campus at our expense for interviews and are notified in late March about the awards. We aim to enroll 50 Richmond Scholars each year.

As for stats, most of the those who are selected for this award have superior records in every way--the most rigorous courses available to them, very stron grades, test scores that are generally 700's and better on each sub-score. In addition, they've done something beyond being an awesome student in terms of numbers. They give us evidence in their applications of the presence of the other factors the committee is looking for (you can read the list of "scholar qualities" at University of Richmond: Merit-Based Scholarships%5DUniversity">http://www.richmond.edu/RichmondScholars)).

I hope this helps you get a better idea of the process and the criteria.

Good luck!

Thanks! Very helpful Info

Just another quick question regarding admissions: about how long should the supplemental essay be?

TGIF to you!

There isn't a defined answer to this question. It should be long enough to appropriately respond to the prompt but it shouldn't be more than about 2 pages in length (when you are looking at regular margins on a 2x spaced page in 12 point font). We're not down here running word counts on anything, I promise. We just want to read something well developed and thought out.

The deadline for the Richmond scholars is 12/15 is that postmarked by than, or received? Can you submit everything online or only snailmail?

thanks

The deadline is a postmark deadline. We'll accept what you send electronically and through the mail. Most people submit the application electronically these days and the rest comes to us via postal mail. You make the deadline if the application is post-marked by 12/15, but we hope you've requested the necessary materials from your school and the college board (or ACT) ahead of that date so that your file will be complete pretty quickly. We try to read as much as we can before the holiday break so we're not completely buried upon return.

I would encourage any highly qualified student to apply in time to be considered for this program. This is an amazing opportunity at a well-respected university. I think the interviews for the finalists are valuable, as they allow top-notch candidates to meet several members of the faculty and to discuss their (the candidate's) qualifications.

We're hoping that DD hears good news from the Richmond Scholars in the spring. Was invited to apply as Hispanic Scholar, researched the University and it has become her "dream" school. Best of luck to all.
