Does selection as a semi-finalist for the scholars program mean that a student has been accepted into UR?

Have you been selected as such? Notified how?

I was e-mailed along with the additional requirements to apply for specific scholarships.

I don't think it officially means that ... but I think it's a pretty good indication

Hello all--

If you are selected as a semi-finalist it is highly likely that you will be admitted. Is it guaranteed? No. You still owe us semester grades and until they are here and look fine, it won't become official. If you know you had a good semester, then you should be in great shape, so congratulations!

To others out there desperate to hear from us about scholarships, we're still reading your applications fast and furious to make our internal deadlines. Semi-finalists notifications are still coming out in batches as students are identified, so there is no absolute date by which we promise to have them all chosen. When we've sent the last batch, I will post it here so you'll know we've finished that part of the process.

Good luck to you all!

UR Admissions

UR ... so would it be reasonable to assume if an applicant applied early in the process and has not heard re: the scholarship that they probably did not make the cut?

Hi Whistle--

I don't think it would be reasonable to think you are out of the running yet. Even if your app came in early, it takes time to file all the paperwork, upload all the scores, pull the files etc. And different members of our staff have worked through their case loads in different ways. So if (for example) you happen to come from a state in the back of the alphabet, that might push you to the bottom of a printout and mean you get read later even if your file was complete earlier. There are a million reasons that you might not have been read yet, but we're all progressing to having read everyone who applied by 12/15 by the same internal deadline.

So be optimistic, OK! Don't count yourself out yet!

UR Admissions

The admission staff of Richmond scholars said that only 650 students have had been selected as Richmond semi-finalist, while the targe groip of recruitment is 750, so the chance to get in should be quite large.
As well, many more offers will be sent, so there should be more applicatns be favored at April ^_^

dacker ... can you or someone else interpret what you wrote?

Hi, piggie... ^^
Let me explain in this way: UR aims to recruit about 750 students every year and, of course, they will send more offers than 750. So first point is that UR will accept more than 750 students in admission
Then, the semi-finalist is around 600-700 students and they have already been identified as more competitive ones. So, these guys may be on the top list to be recruited.
Thus, once you are identified as semi-finalist, you are quite likely to be accepted.
Hope this helps ^^

I would be very interested to hear what UR Admissions has to say about the above ^^. With a scholar class of a maximum of 50 students, 600-700 semifinalists seems like...well, it's quite a large number for the amount of spots available, is it not?

Dacker is right. We'll identify about 700 (give or take a few) semi-finalists for Richmond Scholars, that will be narrowed (by a faculty committee) to about 100 invites to finalists for interviews for 50 awards.

The other number in there is refering to a freshman class of 750 students. But we have to ADMIT more than that to ENROLL 750. So it seems like some folks are forgetting that part.

Maybe this is an example of a time I should have kept my mouth shut!

UR Admissions

haha, UR Admission, will my app get extra score from my answer?
It seems that I understand your previous answers,
anyway, guys, let's just keep moving on...

Does anyone know how many international Richmond Scholars there are, and whether being an international student has a negative impact on the chances of receiving the scholarship?

Are canucks considered international? Maybe if they're from Quebec? Seems to me that UR will need to include West Virginians and Alabamans then too, maybe? ;)

canuck01,
I am an international student and I know there are many Chinese studetns apply for UR, but not sure how many was accepted as semi-finalist.
I suppose UR will not discrimminate any internationals, but may have different considerations

Thanks Whistle, I'm definitely not from Quebec, Alberta is about as different from the french as possible.

Thanks dacker. It's nice to know that I wouldn't be the only one.

Hey canuck ... still, having listened to a few Albertians playing for the Penguins, you speak a different tongue up thar in them wheatfields! ;) Tell Red Green I send my regards.

I'd also like to know more detailed info. (e.g. citizenship) regarding the semi-finalists.
