Richmond Scholars

Thank you. Good to know.

neuse8–yes, I’m really suprised and majorly bummed. I don’t want to sound super cocky, but I definitely thought my stats were equivalent to the ones listed by semifinalists and recipients on this thread…but who knows I guess. Congrats to everyone who was selected

neuse8 - Yes, I am also surprised, as my stats are equivalent or better to many listed on this thread. I can’t say that I’m bummed because I really didn’t want to attend Richmond. My mother, on the other hand, is disappointed as she really liked the school and the close proximity to my home compared to my number one school. Since I received a large scholarship from the other school, I have a lot more leverage. Congratulations to all who were selected!!

I also thought I may have a shot as a semi-finalist, as my stats are also equivalent or higher than others, but my EC’s are maybe not as extensive. I am from Virginia so I am wondering if they feel Virginia residents are less likely to accept with the availability of UVA and William and Mary with in-state tuition? UVA is only about $18,000 for in-state residents.

I thought my son had a shot at the scholarship based on his stats. He also received more paper from U of Rich than any other school, which is probably the case for most of the students on CC. He had an interview with an alum, that he said went just O.K. I can’t believe that the interview may have been the factor that excluded him, but who knows. He would have considered the school with a scholarship, but will probably end up going somewhere else at this point.

I waited a while to post this; hopefully this might help some future applicants in a similar situation.

Richmond was a great fit for me except for the cost. I was hoping to be in the running for one of the school’s big scholarships…I was sadly mistaken. I did not even make it to the semi-finalist round! Here are my stats:

School: large public school in suburban Philadelphia
unweighted gpa: 4.0
class rank: 4/1000+
Classes: All honors or AP
5 AP classes (chem: 5; CalcAB: 5; Stat: 5; EngLit: ?; CalcBC: ?)
Com College course: CIS/Java Programming
ACT score: 33
SAT scores: 2080 (self reported on common app) – I think this was my problem
E/C: Soccer (school and club); Baseball (school and club); Leo Club(officer); Volunteer hrs
Recommendations: I believe very strong (I did not see them)
Essays: Richmond essay might have been a little weak because of topic; Common App
essay and additional science essay were considered very strong by English
teachers; I thought they were really good.

I was accepted by Richmond, but I thought I would crack the top 500-600 applicants that I understood get recommended as semi-finalists…not a peep. Shortly after April, my Dad called and later I emailed Admissions, just to hoping to understand how selections were made and what they felt were my weaknesses…no response.

Congrats to those that received the awards. You must have very impressive stats! Richmond did offer me a $13K need-based grant together with loans and work study; total was about $6K short of my parents’ FAFSA need. I am thankful for the grant, but I did not think I could manage that level of debt and still go to grad school.

Hope this helps someone in future years!
