Do take a sleeping bag, pillow and towel. You will need it, whether sleeping outside or inside. When you get there you will be given all sorts of information.

It is a tradition of sorts for most of the kids to “sleep” outside under the stars in front of Parrish.

We didn’t get any information until the very last minute last year. We may not have gotten the schedule until we got there. You will be very busy. It started late morning and there was programing throughout the day and in to the evening. You are also welcome to sit in on classes. You might want to check to see if there are any particular classes you are interested in that are meeting while you are there. You will be assigned to a host, it is a busy time of year for Swat, only a couple more weeks of classes, so I think there is a great deal of variation as far as how hard students work at their hosting duties. There will be plenty of chances to interact with current students. It ended after lunch on the second day (last year it was on a Thursday and Friday). You might want to post questions on the Swarthmore Class of 2014 facebook page as well.

The message that we got from the Dean (if you’re in the facebook group) gives us the schedule. He also said that he’ll send out more information next week.

Just to clarify - all students will have a host. Camping out on Parrish Beach is an optional (although super fun and you should all do it!) activity organized each year by Earthlust, Swarthmore’s environmental group.

An official school id with your picture will work. If you have more than one, also take the additional one. If you have a passport that will definitely work.

My D lost her driver license the day she was flying home for winter break and she was able to get on the plane with her Swarthmore photo ID.

Well. I’m sure I’m going to Swat so I kind of just went because I could (i live about 20 minutes away).

I thought it was good, the event itself was awesome, and Swatties and the professors are awesome as well. The weather was also fantastic… it’s been so nice lately!

The specs that attended, however, were… well. Okay, so first of all, it’s not like they were all the kids who were going to be there next year (a lot of EDers didn’t attend, and obviously not every student can attend) so most people weren’t sure if they wanted to come to Swat or not so it was kind of weird (i was just so ready to talk about how excited i was/am for next year!! and these kids were like “yeahh i’m looking swarthmore and six other places.”) Secondly, there were just a lot of weird kids. Like I’m pretty weird… quirky, if you will, but these kids were just bizarre. Thirdly, they everyone is still really consumed by the college application process (which obviously has taken up their lives for the past months and is also a point of commonality between them) so all they could talk about were essays and where they’d gotten in and yadda yadda.

Sorry that was a bit of a rant. So aside from the other specs, a portion of which will probably not end up at Swat, RTT itself was awesome. Yet another confirmation that Swarthmore is the place for me :)

Like how were the kids weird/bizarre? My D could not attend RTT, but she is attending and excited about it. She also said that the kids on the Swat Class 2014 FB page are great. That said, I’m curious about the other kids Swat admitted and anything else you want to report back about RTT! Thanks.

My daughter and I attended RTT and had a phenomenal time. She was admitted ED in December. She met a lot of great kids and a few a bit different. I didn’t think that the majority of attendees were “bizzare”. D stayed with one of her teammates from next year, met everyone on the team and feels like they are all sisters already.

The alumni and faculty panels were well attended and very informative. The faculty were extremely approachable and excited to talk to the both of us. I was also impressed that the admissions folks remembered my daughter and her application!!

Love the one about having a shower curtain of the Periodic Table. Wonder if it has the new element discovered recently - with atomic number 117 (I think) and the lifetime of a few milliseconds (which is still like a lifetime compared to other superheavy elements). I would bet this kid would be into that kind of stuff. :)

idk i mean maybe bizarre isn’t the right word. but myself and a few other for-sure, future swatties were a little put off because it seemed like a lot of other specs 1. weren’t going to come to swat (then why are you at rtt???) and only talked about other schools… or 2. they just weren’t open to meeting people. i’m a pretty outgoing person so i was a little disappointed when i’d try to start conversations with people who really just didn’t seem to want to give me the time of day. that was probably just me having bad luck though. the events and rtt itself was awesome. i wish i’d been there for a week! there was so much to do!

The thing about “specs” at an event like RTT is that you are going to get every conceivable scenario, including specs who have no intention at all of actually enrolling at Swarthmore College.

My daughter told me about one girl at her RTT who went back to her mother’s hotel room right after dinner and slep in the hotel. My daughter talked to her the next day and said, “You really shouldn’t go to school here…”

Matching up schools and specs is a lot like sausage making. Ugly process, but the results are usually pretty good.
