ridiculing hotelies?

i recently read an article on Cornell Daily Sun website concerning hotelies.

i found a few disturbing things...

"They are the butt of endless "hotelie" jokes. They are the reason for Cornell's declining status in the rankings, people say. The course of study is a joke. It's like going to high school."

"In a way, they do go to high school: The Statler comes complete with a cafeteria, an auditorium and halls at just the right width and with just the right amount of bulletin boards to bring back memories of applying to college. There are 850 undergraduate hotelies, all of whom know or recognize each other. Cliques abound."

i want to go to college for a college experience. i do not want to go to a school where everyone is stuck in their cliques. i have enough of cliques at my high school. also, i do not want to be ridicule because of my major.

i can handle cold weather. competitivness. being a country-wide apart from my family. etc etc... but cliques and discrimination against one's major!?

it is true about cliques and ridiculing hotelies? any thoughts on this?

I, too, have heard the same thing regarding cliques in the hotel school. When I went up to Cornell for my interview, a student muttered under his breath, after asking to which school i was applying, "they're very 'cliquey.'"
But from what I've also heard, college is what you make of it. I'm sure there will be many opportunities to meet new people, such as those people in the dorms, clubs, sports, etc. and I don't think you have to be "cliquey" if you don't want to be.
I, personally, want to be part of the Hotel School AND part of Cornell University. And I think if we can both rise above the stereotypes of the hotelies, we'll have a great time. Cornell is a great school by itself and the Hotel School at Cornell is the best in the world. I don't think it brings the university down; I think it helps keep the university world renowned, especially since the hospitality industry is the largest in the world.
But that's just my take.

1: every college (hotel school is a sub college of cornell) will have its own groups or "cliques". isnt that just natural?

2: if im correct, that article in the cornell sun PRAISES hotelies. did you read the entire thing?

3: hotelies are made fun of only because they have less work relative to many majors. id call that jealousy, no?

4: i've talked to some hotelies, and they all love the hotel school.

you just cant get sensitive to the jokes and rumourss. thats their problem. and well, if you cant handle such petty criticisms, idk what else to tell you. you should probably come check out the school yourself if you can.

thanks for the replies. just wondering whether it is true or not and other ppl's thoughts on it. i want to make sure that i would enjoy my time at cornell before i apply... next year. =)

csugarman, can't agree with u more. if u are going to cornell this year, best of luck.

chipwich, i am planning to visit cornell this summer. but i like to do my research beforehand. and yes i read the whole thing and i was very happy about the article. but i also read the editorial that followed it and one of its comments (the very rude one). i was just surprise at the descriptions of hotel school.
