So my school, a huge suburban school, is known for grade deflation. What it also does apparently is only send final grades to colleges on our transcripts (with the exception of the senior year report of course). This means that one person can get straight As in a subject through his/her report cards, and end up with a final grade of an A, and one person can get three B Pluses and one A-Plus and squeak in with an A. Any unfair systems like these in your schools?

That’s how my school is too, but I think that’s just how the system works and obviously the B/A+ students are probably not as hard workers and won’t have as impressive ECs, recs, etc. so I think it balances out kinda. Plus that’ll save your ass if you have a bad quarter in some class ever for whatever reason.

That’s not possible. If you get the grades 89.4, 89.4, 89.4, 100 (for each quarter respectively) the average is 92.05, an A-. If you factor midterms and finals in you could bring that grade up or down. Maybe I’m not seeing how your system works, but if it is the average of the grades from the four quarters, your example is invalid.

Well that may be true but my school doesn’t use A-, B+, etc. just A,B,C etc.

How is that deflation?

The transcript system itself isn’t deflation, however we’re known for teachers who hate to give As, and a grading system that generally supports many, many B pluses.
A 92.05 is an A at my school. 90-91 is an A-, 90-99 A, and 100 A-Plus. No extra credit.

Your transcript system is normal.

It’s normal. This is what my school does too. I actually like it better this way because if i get A’s the first half of the year and C’s the second half, i will probably end up with a final grade of B as opposed to having both C/A show up on my transcript.

My quarter grades aren’t averaged together, there is a running total of your grade and you start from that into the next quarter, which really sucks.

As long as the grades I want and my class rank are good enough for the schools i’m applying to, and get me in, and I score higher on the SAT and ACT than my classmates, I don’t care what grades they get.

Final grades being sent like that is good. It shows your overall progress.

Oh please. My school has only one final exam for each subject and whatever you get is what is on your report card.

Also, out of 1200 students in my grade, about 6 have straight As. That’s 0.5%.

I would prefer that to the semester system. If a student gets a 92.4% one semester and a 95% the next, they would get an A under your system but an A-/A in my school.

My school does that too, but I am ecstatic about it-I have gotten a few B’s last quarter in classes I (now) know that I can get A’s or even A+'s in… So it’s more like a second chance
However, the kids who get B’s but bring it up to A’s have a harder time bringing up their grades, so you can think about that when you both get all A’s, I guess
