Do you feel GWU waitlisted an abnormal number of kids this year?

At my school, GWU is generally a safe match, and so many qualified students got waitlisted and rejected. I understand it is quite feasible to get off the waitlist, but this just seems like a cruel move of GWU.

It's hard to say without seeing the admissions statistics from this year to see if they went up or not. Also, it'd be interesting to see if the average stats of the accepted class went up. Possibly it could be because GW students from your school never went because it was a safety (I'm just taking guesses). Even though they swear they look at each applicant separately, it'd be hard not to see a super qualified applicant from the same school while thinking they won't actually attend. I'll never claim to understand the admissions process because it's somewhat ridiculous in my mind, but those are some of the things I was thinking about.

Whatever it is they need to get it together b/c i really want to attend GWU but they waitlisted me!= (
One of my friends got Waitlisted from GWU only to be accepted in NYU, go figure?!?!?!?!?

If you are incredibly interested, I would get in touch with the admissions office. Write a letter, call them, let them know who you are and why you want to go there.

They are finalizing who accepted and who declined. I sure there will be people joining from the waitlist. GWU was good but I decided to relinguish my spot for Stern @ NYU.

I am pretty sure that GW plays games with their admissions with regard to students that they don't think will attend in order to improve their yield. My child is finishing up her first year at U of Chicago with top grades so far, but was waitlisted at GW last year, her safety school. She was accepted at several much higher rated schools and the wait list at GW was quite a surprise even though she had no intention of attending there unless she was rejected at the five other schools that she applied to.

newenglandparent-I don't think you can call it "playing games" when admissions counselors choose not to accept a student who "had no intention of attending" unless she was rejected elswhere. I would instead describe that as GW having a skilled admissions team who after reviewing 20,000 applications each year have become adept at screening out unenthusiastic applicants. Why would a school want to accept an applicant with such a negative attitude toward the school?

I agree with researchmaven. If you showed interest in GWU and applied you got a fair shake. I declined my acceptance for a diiferent school. But GWU offered me a Presidential Scholarship and admittance into the Honors program.

It's not just GWU all schools review the pool of applicants and pick and choose based upon their criteria and guess of your interest. I showed even more interest to WashU, but got waitlisted there. I didn't and won't bash WashU. You just read the letter and move on.

I agree with hsseniorlooking's first comment above - my daughter is also relinguishing her GW spot, after being accepted from BU's waitlist a few days ago. (it really really really hurts though to lose that big GW deposit)

yeah i interviewed and did a million other things, i've never been more patient for anything in my life :( and if i don't get in, i'll be attending american's school of international service so it's not a bad thing either

Still no word here in Memphis, tn you guys....
I hope we all end up where we really want to be after all is said and done.
I've already sent off my confirmation to the University of Maryland, but GWU is where my heart is, so Im patiently waiting on a response from them but as of now am a Terrapin!

Don't expect for GW to do anything quick that's for sure. So far I've been a little discouraged by how long it takes them to do stuff (completing declaration of intents, getting back transcripts, etc.). Either way I love GW, and I hope you're able to get in!
