I was admitted to CLA (3.8, 31 ACT at the time, 5 APs, only one major ec), then I decided I wanted to go to IT late in the game. I called the admissions office and they considered my application again. I was admitted to IT in december. I never thought much of it, as twin cities is not normally seen as a selective institution, but recently I have been hearing of many people being waitlisted at CLA. A friend of mine was waitlisted at CLA with a 27 ACT and 3.3 GPA. He nailed a 5 on the US History exam with ease. His ECs were about average; science olympiad, academic decathalon (both of which he competed in on the state level and even won some awards there), stuff of this variety. He is a complete genius of philosophy -his intended major- but minnesota thought it fit to waitlist him. Does anyone else have a story like this? Minnesota was my super safety, but now -having seen all of these people with 31+ being waitlisted- I am considering myself lucky that they let me into both CLA and IT.

Haha, I'm sure others have read about this around here with my rants...but I have a 3.65 uw gpa and a 32 ACT from Cedar Falls, Iowa. 3 hours away from Minneapolis....and I was waitlisted at CLA and rejected from Carlson :( I couldn't believe it..especially as I've received a large scholarship (72,000) from Tulane (a school ranked much higher) and an acceptance to the University of Miami (a private with 2,000 kid class)

Minnesota is ridiculous this year.....you'd expect a large university with educated people to make legitimate decisions earlier on as to who to accept and at what rate.

Were you ever able to talk to an admissions counselor about your waitlist decision?

I've met some of the people in admissions and dumb is an understatement for these people.

Well, in light of the New Orleans situation Tulane's selectivity has certainly decreased, but I certainly do not believe someone with a 32 ACT should be rejected from -any- school in the twin cities.
@Banker88: I totally understand.. seems like many adcoms at the twin cities are not only dumb, but also blind and deaf.

I did speak with an admissions counselor that I met when I came up and visited in December. He failed to offer me any legitimate answer. The most common response (which he seemed to repeat 3-4 times) was "The pool of applicants has gotten quite strong. Statistics don't make the entire applicant as we make a holistic decision."

Although I had decent EC's along with a 25 hour/week job. He only gave me some lame typed up response that sounded as if it had been prepared for anyone who had called in concerning the waitlist. 'Twas lame.

You got a $72,000 scholarship from Tulane? Are you counting that for all four years? They gave me a $22,000 for freshman year. Did you apply for the Dean's Honor Scholarship?

18k/year..I was just talking about the grand total when I said 72 thousand. But no, I did not apply for the Dean's scholarship....there's a very, very small chance that I'd go to Tulane.

schreck I had the exact same stats as you (3.67 GPA, 32 ACT) and I got a full ride to Carlson honors. This leads me to believe that you didn't apply early enough. At my hs the people who applied earliest were admitted but the ones who applied around halloween have been getting waitlisted. I see a clear correlation between application time and deicision. I know of a kid with a 31 ACT and 3.8 GPA who applied around October and got waitlisted by CBS and another girl who has a 30 ACT and 3.7 GPA getting close to a full ride (she applied before September 15th). Another kid who applied to IT in early november with a 3.5 and 31 ACT got waitlisted as well, and another kid I know has a 3.8 and 32 ACT applied in late september and got in. A U of M rep visited us and told us that this year the app numbers were astronomical. I interpret this situation as meaning that they admitted students the standard way they've been doing it for the last few years early in the admissions process but realized midway through that they were almost full on students who applied so early in this process.

this is really true..... i applied with a 3.2 and 21 ACT to general studies in september, and got admitted in October!

Haha wow...that is unreal. It's pathetic when a school begins to make decisions based on when one applied (when it's before the "priority deadline") rather than the academic merit of the applicant. 3.2 gpa/21 act? You're going to a school I was waitlisted at. That's pathetic. No offense to you, but I don't plan on being put on a waitlist while people with gpas that are .5 less than mine and ACT scores 10 less are in. That's sad. **** the University of Minnesota.

Wow I thought my situation was bad. The inconsistency is what really gets to me with Minnesota. Shouldn't they be taking the MOST qualified students. I applied september 15 with a 28 ACT, 3.76 GPA (uw) Strong extracurriculars, and was waitlisted. How do you think they will go about weeding through all these waitlisted applications with varying stats? Seems like they really messed something up this year.

Oh, and two things I forgot to add (though I think I said this somehwhere else in the Minnesota thread): I was waitlisted to CLA, and got the same generic-sounding response about Minnesota's "hollistic approach" when I called. Frustrating.

They also applied to General Studies, schreck. Don't freak out, the average ACT for that college is only 20.3 or something.. They didn't get into CLA or anything. CLA's average ACT is 25.8, I'm still a little sad I got waitlisted when I'm 5 or 6 points above that... Oh, well. My GPA and rank hurt me some, though. Good luck to all waitlistees!!!

Haha, I wasn't freaking out. My concerns are legitimate. It's the same school as they'll have the opportunity to transfer out at a later date. Still ridiculous.

Edit: Where is everyone else planning on going now that they've been waitlisted? I've been accepted at UMiami and that is a strong consideration. I hear from Florida next Friday so that will have some to do with my decision. Minnesota is no longer a consideration, no matter what happens with the waitlist.

I'm really turned off by Minnesota too. I will probably attend UW-Madison, though I'm waitlisted there too, or otherwise University of Missouri-Columbia because of its journalism program. Schreck, definitely check out Miami. I have a couple friends that go there and love it. It's quite funny that a prestigious school like Miami will accept you and Minnesota won't. Their loss, I guess.

I know man..it's ridiculous. What can ya do though? I was just really surprised by this whole Minnesota situation. I will be visiting Miami in March so I'll definitely get a good feel for the campus/area at that point. Best of luck with UW-Madison! I hope you get in there, for that's an extremely nice school in itself.

@ Fabalyss21

Don't bank on the waitlist at Madison, it exists for the benefit of the college only, not the student. They just want to make sure they fill every bed in the dorms.

Thanks. I'm certinaly not banking on it, but I've done alot to enhance my chances (4.0 this semester, extended contact with admission counselor), and am practicing the art of positive thinking at this point ;)

I mailed my letter to Minnesota today letting them know that I wasn't going to attend in 2007. I knew I wasn't so why hold onto a spot in CLA. OSU gave me alot of money, Honors and direct admit to their business school. Minnesota gave me magnets and a waitlist.

I hope someone who wans to go there gets it. Good luck to you schreck and fabalyss21

I'm keeping the magnets.
