Right for GS?

I have seen a bunch of these am I right for GS threads and am wondering what people think of my situation and weather or not I would be a good candidate.

In high school I sufferd from depression and did poorly but not across all my classes. The ones I applied myself to I did very well in. Think along the lines of getting As in AP chem and AP econ but getting Cs and Ds in random low level english classes. I took the SAT and did very well (2200) but ended up dropping out because I felt hopeless applying to colleges (my GPA was sub 3.0).

I took two years to travel and get myself together. I am 20 now and a second semester student at City College of San Francisco. My GPA is 3.8 and im in the honors program doing quite well. I am very active in student body and have done a few finance internships for work experience. Im sure I could get letters of rec from teachers and former employers. I was planning on applying to GS at the end of next spring to transfer as a junior.

Anyway Im just wondering if people think I would be a good candidate for GS. I know most of the people applying are mid 20s is 20 just not the age that GS is looking for? Thanks and good luck to everyone that applied this year!

Hi, there. I am a GS student. The average age of the GS student body is 29 years old. We are a diverse group so you will meet students in the 20’s right up to their 50’s and 60’s. You have a 3.8 GPA as a second semester student so I’m assuming that this GPA is from one semester since we’re only mid-March at this point. You might want to consider finishing CC and maintaining a high GPA to underscore your educational achievements and commitment. Plus, it may provide you with more credits to transfer should you be accepted to Columbia.

Thanks studies12. Yes I am planing on finishing at my CC and then applying to schools. Im thinking about applying to GS next year. I guess im wondering if 20-21 year old CC students with good GPAs are common at GS or if I should focus my efforts on applying to other schools.

It’s definitely worth applying, if you’re interested. The average age is older, but it’s just an average. There are certainly students younger than you. Focus on maintaining a high GPA (as in, bring it up higher, if you can), write a great essay, and you’ve got a shot.

My advice is to consider the strength of the academics at Columbia, your interests, and whether you’re up for a challenge. Age, imo, at least at Columbia, should be the last consideration. Believe me, whatever your age, you will be a part of this community!
