I don’t think an SAT score in high 1200s or 1300s will hold him back and 1400s would slightly improve chances. I believe Virginia Tech weighs GPA more than SAT. SAT scores in the 1100s and lower 1200s would probably lower chances.
VT also superscores - which means they take the best of a section across multiple sittings. Example: First time takes gets Reading of 560 and Math of 720 = 1280. Second time takes gets Reading of 620 and Math of 650 = 1270.
His superscore is the best of each - which would be Reading 620 and Math 720 = 1340
