Rigor of UCSD?

Hey I was admitted to UCSD and visited for admit day, which answered most of my questions, but I am looking to go to grad school and was wondering how hard it is to get a high GPA at UCSD (3.5 and up)? how hard is the transition from high school, is UCSD a lot harder, or is your College GPA about the same as your high school GPA?

Pre-med right? LOL, I also thought about this when I was picking schools.

Depending on your SAT and the quality of your high school, your GPA could drop from barely nothing to one full grade point.

Thankfully, my GPA has remained above 3.5 after 5 quarters, at a 3.6. I imagine the other bio majors aren't as fortunate.

your high school GPA won't reflect that of your college GPA unless you work your ass off. depending on your classes, you're going to run into road blocks for that A. every student in the school was smart enough to get into UCSD. every student is gunning for that A, and most of the time, there is a grading curve.

are the students very competitive or are they more chill ?

I think most students here are pretty chill and laid-back even though they study real hard.

In terms of rigor, it really depends on the classes you're taking this qtr. I'm a mechanical engineering major, and my first two quarters were very manageable so I pulled off pretty good GPAs (3.5+), but this quarter I'm taking more classes, and I'm also taking classes that require a LOT of time to study so I'm really struggling to keep up this quarter, and I'm having to reshape my study schedule just to keep up. So, it really depends on what you take, IMO

ok thanks, do you have any idea how poli sci or IR kids manage ?

IR is only offered at the graduate level as a specific study. However, you can study IR in the poli sci department and get almost the same people teaching you.

If the curve is anything like the class I TAed, it's about a B+ average.

i'm an IR major and i can tell you that it's been pretty chill for me so far and my GPA is 3.5+

but then again, my high school was extremely competitive and stressful. so i agree that it really depends on the type of environment youre coming out of from high school.

you could also do IR with a focus on political science. just throwing that out there lol

Are you referring to the IS major?

It depends on your ability.

what about a major in chemistry?

Yeah, lately i don't even bother to separate the two haha
everytime i ask how someones IR is they have IS and vice versa.
