Rigor & Pros/Cons of Bucknell University

What is the work load like? How hard is it to get an ‘A’? Are the mathematics and economics departments any good as I understand this is mainly an engineering school?

Also, what are the pros/cons of the school?

Haha. Mainly an engineering school? It is a top ranked “liberal arts” college. It also has a very goog business school. It’s economics major is very popular and well respected.

My D just graduated Magna Cum Laude, so she got lots of A grades. She attended every class and took the work seriously. She saw students blow off classes, not do the readings or study much. Guess what? They did not get good grades. And the work load is what you would expect from a very respected school.

Pros–it is a great school with an excellent reputation. Its campus is beautiful. You can really get to know professors personally and there is opportunity for research . There is also a lot of opportunity for study abroad. It does have D1 athletics–Patriot League.

Cons-- a bit too greek focused and not very diversified. Quaint college town (pro) that does not have a lot to offer and is far from any major city. (it does have limited shopping in Lewisburg and more a 20 minute ride away.) Bucknell offers buses to major cities, such as NYC, for a day visit.

Overall, it is a very good school. It is not large state school. So it will have less to offer class wise, be less diversified and have less national recognition for athletics.

Ahh, so I’m guessing it’s very well-respected by graduate schools too?

If you check the stats of each graduating class the past few years you will see that many go on to graduate school. Each year Bucknell compiles a profile of what happens to each graduating class-let’s put it like this…graduate school admissions officers know that Bucknell graduates have very strong credentials for admission to top graduate school programs. Kind of surprised by the question, “how hard is it to get an A”–at Bucknell… to get “the A”–you have to work hard. I worked hard as a pre-med–but also found plenty of time to socialize and have fun. The people I became friends with at Bucknell were great and very friendly-I could not picture myself being at any other school-best decision I ever made! I agree with morrismm’s post…if you don’t do the reading, if you blow off classes, or don’t have the ability to focus when you study-you won’t do very well. The Biology Department was excellent and I was well-prepared for medical school…I worked hard and I have no regrets about graduating Magna cum Laude…it helped in my medical school acceptance

My daughter is a math/econ major at Bucknell. She said Probability was quite difficult, but she has done well because she has applied herself. if you gain admission, it is because the school believes you can do the work, and they are excellent at selection. Look at the sophomore retention rate and 4 year graduation rates, quite good. Her classes are small, and she has gotten to know her professors well, something you won’t see at larger schools. She just returned from a Econ/Engineering semester in London. Loved it.
