Rigorous classes

does the university of michigan take into account the rigor of classes?

at my school,
the majority of the people who have a high gpa : 3.95-4.0 have this gpa mainly because their 1. freshman year was simple. 2. all years of high school were easy classes.

my gpa is always wavering from a 3.88-3.9 but my courses are much, MUCH harder than these people.

is this taken into account?

Yeah, it sure is.

so i mean - in a general sense, would i be taken over a person with a 4.0 (who had easy classes freshman/all years), just gpa wise?

yeah. tough classes and a 3.9 >>> easy classes and 4.0

okay. but what about if some people had only easy courses freshman year…but the rigor increasing throughout high school? would my freshman year still be taken into account over these people?

They don’t take freshman year into account at all.

Alright.
Let me name sophomore classes of me compared to other people:

Me:
Advanced math, symphonic band, chemistry, advanced english (this class is insanely hard at our school), physics, spanish 3.
-3.89 gpa.

person #2:
class to get into honors math senior year, vertebrates, chemistry, regular english, spanish 3, united states history.
3.95 gpa.

person#3.
double honors math, biology, regular english, gov/econ, astronomy, spanish 2.
4.0 gpa.

course wise - who would be selected?

Are you concerned you’re not going to get into U-M? Is there a particular reason you started this thread that you haven’t divulged?

Yes. I want to go to the University of Michigan.
My school is highly competitive…I just want to know what I can do to be above that and make my chances better to get in.

You have an unweighed 3.88-3.9 average. Relax. If you are instate, you’re in. Even OOS with that gpa and courseload, you are in.

Okay. But I mean, university of michigan only accepts a certain amount of people. and there are some kids that have the same rigorous courses as me - but have a higher unweighted gpa/rank. That is what truly concerns me.

Did you take the ACT/SAT yet? Do well there and you can truly distinguish yourself.

Not yet.
I’ve been taking practice tests but im not consistent. ill get a like a 28, 28, 31, and then a 25. what books are better for practice?

Try the SAT/ACT forums. They are in a list under “top forums” in the upper left side of this page.

Thanks so much.
My goal on the act is a 31-32. a 30 would be okay i guess.
would that guarantee me a spot in the university of michigan?

Like I said, “You’re in.” Relax! :-)

I would say your essays and Academic class rank will probably be the factors in determining if you get in. I didn’t have good SAT scores and my UW GPA was way lower than yours. But a 3.9 will certainly give you a good shot at getting into Michigan. Work on your essays and recommendations. SAT/ACT scores are important, but won’t be the deciding factor in your acceptance. Don’t stress. If you believe you have worked hard, then Michigan will think the same also.

Your gpa is fine. Just concentrate on getting at least a 31 on the act. The higher, the better.

Academic class rank? But many people share the same rank…like 20 have a 4.0. 20 people have a 3.9.

and yess. i will work hard to get that 31.

at the toughest schools, Michigan can be your safety when you have a GPA of 2.8+

at not competitive schools, you can have a 4.0 and still be a reach, so yes
