Rigorous classes

wait what?

Nothing is a “guarantee”.

If you’re in-state with a 3.89 and a 30 on the ACT…80% youre in if you do a good amount of volunteering/extracirriculars. If not… or out of state… you need some more work =P

they def. do. The valedictorian at my HS only graduated with a 3.6 because of the tough grading habits and courses of my HS. He’s at Harvard today. I am OOS and if UMich knew about my situation (and my gpa wasnt too hot relative to other people’s on this site) without me telling them then I’m sure your situation would be fine. I did extremely well on the SAT though. Dont worry.

80%
-that’s what worries me. i want to be a full guarantee. the semester ended today and i think i pulled my gpa just slightly above a 3.9. junior year is coming up…and im working really hard on my ACT’s to get the best score possible. are there any books that can help me with this? the best one?

thanks ibleedblue :)

While you are a strong candidate, there is no such thing as a guarantee at U of Mich. Period. You will also be compared among your peers at your school. If you are not in the top 10th comparative percentile, you may still be selected, but it will be due to outstanding recommendations and well written essays. Also know that I have seen very strong students waitlisted or rejected because they didn’t get around to SUBMITTING their app until after Christmas. If you’re serious, make sure you’re fully ready for the early response deadline of Nov. 1.

my class rank is 52/400. but many people share that rank with me. and many people share ranks above me. is that taken into account at all?

i will definitely have my application sent well before Christmas time.

How many people from your school get into UMich, and what were their GPA/ACT scores? If people typicly get into UMich with lower GPA/ACT than you, you should get in.

qwerty key, this year about 15-20 people go into university of michigan. i heard one kid’s score was like a 26…but my friend said that she was around a 3.8 w/a 33 act score.

Try and find out what the average GPA/ACT scores of those people were… It may be too late now, but see if you can.

As well, is that 15-20 being mostly the top of the class or are there a bunch going to Ivy league schools and such?

hmmm. yeah it is probably too late unless i asked each and every one of them. and i dont know some of them.

only 2 are going to ivy league schools. :/

also, while im asking questions,
how can you calculate your gpa at the university of michigan?

Count only sophomore and junior years
Count only core academic classes, foregin language, and computer classes
Round all grades (A+, A, A- = 4 B+, B, B- = 3)
Then, you average them

With only 20 going to UMich and only 2 going to schools better than it, being number 52 doesn’t sound very good. That doesn’t mean you can’t get in though.

it doesnt look into band at all? doesnt that show consistency and dedication?
that’s not calculated into the university of michigan gpa system?

yes. but i also have had all advanced courses my entire high school career - including freshman year, where most people just took simple classes. of course, michigan doesnt look into freshman year. people that are ranked number 1 at our school barely have any advanced courses.

rigor is definitely taken into account. and freshman year isn’t counted when michigan recalculates your gpa for their admissions process.

well if rigor is taken into account, how come my ranking isnt?
being 52/400 isnt terrible - and many of the people with higher ranking did not have rigorous courses at all.
but yet - my ranking is lowering my chances at u of m.

Your ranking isn’t necessarily lowering your chances at u of m. if your school doesn’t weight the GPAs, then it could just mean some kids are taking easier classes and passing off with higher GPAs, though Michigan would prefer you to take harder classes even if you don’t have a 4.0. At least this is what the rep from UM told me.

And they do see the dedication in band, just make sure you mention whatever awards you got in band (section leader, division i at state, etc) to reaffirm that. I did four years of Track and being able to mention that I was captain helped prove that I wasn’t just taking a passive role in it; I might not be All-State but I provided leadership to the team.

f your school doesn’t weight the GPAs, then it could just mean some kids are taking easier classes and passing off with higher GPAs, though Michigan would prefer you to take harder classes even if you don’t have a 4.0.

 • well at my school, A- are 3.7’s, which is why my ranking is lower than the people with 4.0’s. im glad that the university of michigan looks at this.

okay that’s good. im definitely glad they take band into account. i’ve won 10 medals at districts and states at solo ensemble - all I’s. i really want michigan to see that.

I had a 35 ACT, 2310 SAT, 15 AP courses, an IB Diploma a great counselor rec and great teacher recs. I worked on my essay throughout the summer and got it edited with my teacher. I was instate and go to a private college prep school. I applied early and got deferred, then waitlisted and finally rejected. =(

I’m at University College London currently, I’m transferring to Cambridge University when school starts…

Just kidding
(I wanted to have some humor in this thread, the thread seems so depressing with all the worrying questions)

But seriously calm down, you sound like your going to have a heart attack, honestly it isn’t.
First of all, take 10 deep breath. Stop worrying

2- UM has a good acceptance rate, you definitely have a chance, stop worrying about your GPA, admissions isn’t really a competition that you can tell with a definite winner (this kid at my school got accepted to MIT with a 3.7-3.8 GPA (UM style GPA)).

3-Work on your ACT, it probably is more important than your GPA, seriously, it really can make or break your admissions more than your GPA (frankly colleges don’t even care about GPA, they care more about the classes your took and what grade you got in them). How do I know this? Lets just say that my adviser at school is the college counselor and so I grew up pretty much in the college counseling office. (my school has a advisories where each student is assigned an adviser who help the student with his/her schedule, plans parties, give announcements, and other important school information)

4-For band, they don’t take the grade into consideration, they see the class itself as a EC pretty much but if you have done it for a long time, it will be seen as a commitment. Also, your medals at Solo and Ensemble, are those in your first two years of high school? How can you have 10, I thought you can really only get 2 a year–one at districts, one at states.

5-ranking doesn’t matter either, my school doesn’t rank (I do go to a private college prep school, and most private schools don’t rank), this is because it is unfair. Colleges know that because a kid who takes no honors class with a 4.0 is almost certainly not smarter than a kid who takes all Honors and AP classes who gets a 4.0 or a 3.8 even.

hahahah.

Also, your medals at Solo and Ensemble, are those in your first two years of high school? How can you have 10, I thought you can really only get 2 a year–one at districts, one at states.
-im glad this is seen as commitment. well i included eighth grade, but excluding it, i’ve gotten eight. it’s because i participated in states and districts with a solo and trio and got I’s in each one.

thanks a lot :)

Ahh I see, trust me, you’ll be fine.

Enjoy your summer and don’t stress too much about it, just make sure you are productive over the summer (i.e. camps, volunteer, intern etc.).

Pick something/activity during your school years and be committed to it. Other than that, you’ll be fine.
