"Rigorous" Courses

Do you guys have the same system of U, M, and O courses?
I really like fashion, and I took Fashion last semester...and then I realized that it was an O course, and almost completely filled with stupid girls just there for the credit, and they were right in choosing the course, it was really easy and I didn't learn anything.
I also took Gr.11 Painting, and I'm going to take Gr.12 Design this semester, both are M courses. I'd like to add that these two courses are not easy courses either, our art teacher is crazy hard, won't let us talk and makes us paint for every second of the class, and never gives out 90's... There's also APS (intro to anthropology, psychology, sociology), another M course, although it's reputated to be one of the hardest courses in our school at the Gr.11 level, and my class has some of the top students of my grade in it.

How will the unis see this? Will they care that I took these courses because I like them? Or will they just look at my currently very sad looking transcript of only 4 U courses, and decide
that I'm just not challenging myself?

Also, are they going to be placing more emphasis on the senior yr when looking at the apps? Because next year, my courses will be a lot more U's (2 maths, eng, bio, chem, and probably at least two more fine arts courses.)

read my thread called “Please Help A Desperate Canadian” or something like that. It’s on this forum, and is on the first page. I asked a question that is exactly the same, except wit different courses. People generally told me to not worry about it since I was taking Bio/Chem/Physics/Math/Eng and that was rigorous enough.

(And your guidance counc. checks off a box on the Common App. saying you took the most rigorous. So, its not even like they check what you took, your Guidance counc. decides and if you took a decent course load she should check it off).

But read my thread nevertheless, it’ll help you out

EDIT: here’s the link: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/canada/839569-desperate-ontario-student-very-important-questions.html

Thanks Viggy~ xD

np, and not sure if they put more focus on your senior course load, but I have seen kids (when posting “stats” and their courses) take far more APs and challenging courses in gr.12 in comparison to gr.11. Maybe they are doing this because obviously they can’t get all their gr.12 marks before decisions (probably just semester 1 marks or so), so they won’t be affected as much by taking a heavy course load.

Btw, what are the 4 U courses? One is def. math, the other english…but what about the other 2. If they are challenging courses (chem, bio, or something like that) then you’ll be fine. I actually think courses like painting and design and such might show that you are more well-rounded and unique candidate since the usual candidates have all the sci, math, and such courses (I have nothing to back this up, its just hypothetical).

My gr.11 schedule has spanish, geo, business, and computer science (all M or O or CU). And I have 5 U courses (took comp sci. in gr.10). So, my schedule , in terms or U and M/O courses, is similar to yours and there is NO WAY my guidance counc. won’t check off most rigorous.

chem and bio
=D

I looked through brown’s website again, and it seems that they really want you to have all three sci’s and four years of language
T-T
I didn’t take physics because I don’t like math, and physics has that huge bunch of formulas…but I might have to take it in the summer or something…and then there’s also french…I didn’t take it this year, but maybe I could do it over the summer (summer school + e-learning)…omg, I hate French. I can’t pronounce it right for my life - -++

“So, my schedule , in terms or U and M/O courses, is similar to yours and there is NO WAY my guidance counc. won’t check off most rigorous.”

That’s good!
But I don’t know what my gd is gonna say when she/he sees that Fashion - -
I only realized it’s like, THE slacker course for (really not trying to be racist and stereotypist here, but…) dumb white girls…= = after I’m like halfway through the semester

Physics is a lazy man’s math. :)

But seriously, other than the fact that they both use a calculator, physics and math are IMHO very different.

hmmm, is physics more funnnn? xD
Maybe I will take it this summer. MAYYYBE
xD

I like math more :P. Physics requires more memorizing and I really don’t like that. But I’m better at math than physics (grade 12 calc was 99; grade 12 physics was 90).

damn ahah 99 in calc.? yea, i’m just starting physics and i can already tell that it is much diff. than math. it uses new skills and uses math in a new way.

“damn ahah 99 in calc.?” that’s pretty amazing xD

Triple checking your work along with a graphing calculator helps you a lot. Predominately asian school = people do really well in math. (Well in IB.) A friend got 100.

what calculator do u have? I have a crappy TI

Everyone in my class was required (and only permitted) TI-83/84s.

If you know how to use them, it can pretty much solve around 75% of the questions you’ll be asked in calculus/advanced functions at the high school level. The other 25% requires you to understand the concepts to derive or prove identities/formulas.

We’re not allowed to use calculators in my Cal class :(
