Perhaps one of the first songs I heard of his (1964) that struck a chord in my little 6 year old body and literally moved me to tears then, and still has that effect on me -
Such a gifted musician in so many ways. His gifts to the world will be enduring. RIP.
Yes, his songs were a favorite when I was a kid. I think of my parents and childhood home when I hear them.
My mom played piano & she loved Burt Bacharach’s music. We had sheet music to all of his hits … my mom would play & we kids would sing. Among my (many) favorite childhood memories!
These 60 songs just bring my childhood back in such a visceral way.
Me, too. Songs, mor than smells, really take me back.
This was a nice cover from a 1999 Austin Power’s movie. It’s Burt along with Elvis Costello:
RIP.
I’m getting my money’s worth from Spotify as we speak.
I love “Painted from Memory,” the album of songs they wrote together, just exquisite. Spotify
Kind of a weird foreshadowing, but Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head was one of the songs last night on Name That Tune.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is one of my favorite movies. Great score.
If the Tony Award for Best Original Score had been awarded in 1969, he might have been an EGOT winner. Although probably not, since Promises, Promises lost to 1776 for Best Musical. Still, he was an EGO winner.
RIP.
What the World Needs Now Is Love Sweet Love (by Jackie DeShannon) is the song that comes to mind when I think of Burt Bacharach.
His music was just spectacular. I read off a list of many of his hits to DH and we couldn’t believe how many we could easily sing and how much we loved them all.
What a gifted songwriter. What a loss.
Thanks, ski, for reminding us about how truly great Burt Bacharach was. “Raindrops”, IMHO, is one of the mega-classics by any songwriter. One of my favorite songs as a kid and today.
Look: I am a besotted Lennon-McCartney fan, so I sometimes forget that there were other songwriters who were also amazing. Mr. Bacharach is CLEARLY one of the all-time super greats.
So we don’t forget his accomplishments, here is a list of his songs:
RIP, great one. You done REAL good, Sir.
He wrote so many great songs, but my absolute favorite is “That’s What Friends Are For”. RIP Mr. Bacharach.
What the world needs now is Love, sweet Love - such a true sentiment and beautiful song.
Raindrops and Close to You are other favorites.
He had a good, long, successful life. RIP.
So many fabulous songs which have stood the test of time.
Speaking of movies - the scene in “ My Best Friend’s Wedding” where they sing “ I Say a Little Prayer”…
