There is this consolation however:

According to experts in these matters, bulldogs are among the dumbest of dogs, rating 85th out of 87 recognized breeds on the intelligence scale. (See: "The Intelligence of Dogs.")

So the odds are he was only dimly aware of what was going on around him.

Farewell, Danny Boy!

Or perhaps his heart burst with pride at the triumph of brains over brawn:

www.harvardsucks.org

*"You may drive a dog off the Kings armchair, and it will climb into the preachers pulpit; he views the world unmoved, unembarrassed, unabashed."

--Jean De La Bruyère *

Surely you can't be thinking of the bulldog - among the stupidest creatures on four legs.

If Yale wanted to adopt such a symbol, their mascot would be the border collie, not the slow-witted bulldog.

it's more like we need something around to remind us that not everyone is brilliant.

Ah. In that case, a suitable Yale symbol.

Sorry if I was going a little too fast for you, Byerly: I meant that Handsome Dan might have been pleased, rather than heartbroken, at the demonstration that Harvard's superior brawn on the football field was more than matched by Yale's brains and ingenuity in engineering the prank immortalized at harvardsucks.org.

No matter. I can certainly understand why it would be so important to you to denigrate a poor dead animal. No doubt if Handsome Dan had gone to Harvard he would have been as slow-witted as you say.

Byerly --

What the mother f is wrong with you? Why do you have to turn EVERYTHING around to a Harvard/Yale argument?? This cute little dog -- our mascot -- died! That's it! Try to show some compassion, and if you can't, then there's no reason to respond to this thread!

Nobody asked, "Hey Byerly. How does the death of this poor little creature reflect the superiority of Harvard over Yale?" Wake up and realize that not every post asks for you to project your views on Harvard/Yale. Sorry, but most people on the Yale board don't really care about or want to constantly read about what you think.

Sorry to offend your tender sensibilities, young Mistress Sprezzatura.... I wiil henceforth let you weep in peace for "this poor little creature" - the 15th of his breed to be dressed up in a little blue sweater and paraded up and down the sidelines - in fair weather and foul - inspiring generations of Yalies as they scream: "HAHHVAD SUCKS!"

RIP Dan XV. May you be the last of your breed exploited in this way!

haha ouch! sprezzatura 1, byerly 0

RIP HANDSOME DAN!!!!!

lol Byerly. die.

P.S. I'm a girl.

That's so sad! But maybe the new one will bring more luck to Yale re: the game?

You spoke too soon, sirwonkalus!

Personally, I find it offensive that generations of Yalies have exploited these poor, dumb dogs in this manner.

Lets hope future Yalies act more humanely - filled as they are with tender sensibilities such as those demonstrated by Mistress Sprezzatura!

Far better would be a human Yalie, dressed in a dog suit, so that real animals could be left in peace.

Even better, Yale - like Dartmouth with its Indian - should simply drop this inappropriate use of a suppposed "lesser" creature for gridiron symbolism

Dartmouth is now the "Big Green: ... Yale should be simply the "Big Blue" ... or maybe the "Dark Blue" to differentiate themselves from Columbia - the "Light Blue."

Just because Harvard's a color and can't have a cute little crimson running around? Geez since when is having a pet exploitation? Dan was probably treated better than most pets. He certainly got a lot of attention, and that's what a lot of pets lack.

I personally think that having a mascot be a color is just stupid. And Columbia is the Lions, another mascot better than crimson.

Well let's not stoop to Byerly's level and start Harvard-bashing, seeing as this post wasn't intended for either.

But you're right, zantedeschia, in saying that it's not animal exploitation. I don't think any of the Dans felt abused or exploited, Byerly. They're dogs. You can't compare them to the "Indians." Having a mascot like the "Indians" is like having a mascot as the "Black People." That's just wrong; you can't really compare that to dogs.

The Dans go to football games, Bulldog Days, and other events where they get fed and played with by everybody. I can't wait to see a picket line of bulldogs demanding their rights to be treated fairly by Yalies.

Shocking!

You sound like a Southern slaveowner: "Why, ou-ah slaves are treated bettah than most people, suh! Since when is that exploitation? They-ah well fed and we take good cay-ah of 'em!"

Princeton and Columbia can hardly be excused for their politically incorrect and demeaning use of the tiger and lion as symbols, but - unlike Yale - they at least avoid marching teathered specimens up and down the sidelines in fair weather and foul, to be tugged at and annoyed by drunken college students.

Hahahha, Byerly. You're making me laugh. I think you just enjoy hearing yourself talk (well... watching yourself type) and seeing us respond to your dumbass comments. What a lame argument, dude. Why don't you go find a PETA article somewhere to back up your points about the exploitation of the Dans? I'm surprised you haven't already done so.

Hmm... taking more than his usual 30 seconds to respond... He probably really is looking for an article somewhere lol. I'm really dying to see what he's got. This is such a fun argument. Pointless, yes, but that's what makes it all the more enjoyable.

"But you're right, zantedeschia, in saying that it's not animal exploitation. I don't think any of the Dans felt abused or exploited, Byerly. They're dogs. You can't compare them to the "Indians."
Maybe if Summers had his way, he would make the mascot the "Harvard Women"

lol good one, crimsonbulldog.

See? Look! They do love Handsome Dan!
