THANKS

I have heard that due to an extensive, demanding, and pre-structured curriculum at RISD, it is difficult to take classes at Brown, mostly due to scheduling, but it is possible.
I think taking classes the other way around is a bit easier, as, obviously, there aren't specific courses you must take at certain times as a Brown student, and thus if squeezing it a RISD class was your first priority, you could probably do it.

Both schools have amazing reputations. Brown, of course, is ivy league (if you're one to care) and ranked highly (once again, if you think that matters). I tend to think of it as stronger in the humanities. I know RISD is one of the top art schools in the country, in general. However, for art schools, reputation varies greatly depending in specific major, and I don't know how architecture is.

Finally, you're likely to get additional, and possibly better informed responses if you post this on the Art School forum here on CC. (Or perhaps you already have, and I just haven't seen it. But if not, I would recommend doing so.)

S1 is a junior at RISD and S2 is a HS senior about to apply to Brown so I know a little something about the two schools.

Except for freshman, RISD students are allowed to take one class per semester at Brown and count it towards their liberal arts requirement. About 25% of RISD students take at least one class at Brown during their time there, so it is certainly doable. Most frequently, they take a foreign language class. RISD and Brown are on different academic schedules (Brown is on the semester system, RISD is on a 4-1-4 calendar), so you have to give up some vacation time to take classes at the other school. It’s easier to do in the fall than in the spring, because the schedules are just out of synch by one week then. From what I have been told by students, cross-registering is a pretty easy process.

Brown students have a much harder time trying to take classes at RISD, because most RISD classes are studios and have very limited enrollment. Also, they tend to have pretty rigid prerequisites for anything beyond intro-level classes. RISD studios usually meet one day a week for a six-hour session. That’s hard to fit in the traditional M-W-F or Tu-Th schedule at Brown.

RISD and Brown now offer a joint 5-year program that gives you BA from Brown and a BFA from RISD. To get around the scheduling problem, you spend the entire first year at RISD, the second full year at Brown, etc. Here’s the link:
