Recently I was accepted into both Ringling Summer PreCollege and RISD Summer PreCollege for Animation. For my major specifically, which summer program is better? Cost isn’t too much of an issue for me but I still keep it in mind. Thanks!
Ringling is tops for animation.
I HIGHLY URGE YOU TO GO TO RINGLING’S. While RISD is extremely up on the ranks, it is there for the sole reason of design and that alone. To be blunt, all of their other majors are very lackluster. My friend and I both split ways last year for animation precollege: him to RISD and I to Ringling. Now he’s going to the Ringling one this year bc he regrets his RISD choice. He said his animation teacher there’s credentials included owning a restaurant. Ringling faculty all come from Pixar, Disney, Blue Sky, and Dreamworks, and they listed their accomplishments to us; RISD faculty went on about how they KNEW people that have accomplishments. That aside, RISD precollege is not only stressful with unnecessary irrelevant busy work, they also are very unorganized. They gave the students a supply list to go to town and buy everything themselves; when they returned, RISD said they had given them the wrong list, and they had to go buy more different supplies. Ringling gives you all your supplies, including a schedule that is meant to help you build your concentration. At Ringling, you’ll take courses meant for you with faculty more than experienced, and you will be very well taken care of. (field trips to the beach, Ringling art museum, movies) All while learning so much.
I can guarantee you this: I definitely would not have gotten in 6 schools all with animation scholarships without the portfolio transformation Ringling gave me.
@shasuperzam can you clarify what programs you are referring to with your reference to “design?” (RISD has Graphic Design, Apparel Design, Furniture Design, etc.)
You also should consider that the name RISD carries weight. If the program is not equal that’s another matter. Did you check the RISD and Ringling bios for staff online? If one program is clearly better and that’s your goal then you can figure out which to choose. Also go to Pixar and Disney sites and check the bios of animators.
@IzzysMom Design majors encompassing all the majors with “design” in the title. (an exception would be such their fine arts program is also strong)
