RISD perspective from a freshman

Hmm... well ill start on how i decided on RISD. I never thought of going to art school until last June, when i came up to the north to visit my great aunt, and to check out schools like Tufts (Left halfway through the tour because it definitely wasn't for me), Northeaster ( a bit too big), Roger Williams (huh? no idea that school even existed until she told me). RISD was not even an option. As we were going through providence however, she told me about RISD and how it's so close to Brown and because of this, offers a lot of opportunities. I wanted to learn more, so she scheduled a tour for me the following day and when i went, i was absolutely blown away at how much i FELT at home. I was obsessed, i had never felt any way near as connected on all the other college tours. So i found out everything i could about RISD, and started constructing my WHOLE portfolio that summer. I had no life pretty much for a while. it was worth it, for i am here now.

Campus- Spread out, but because of this, it has a uniqueness that a lot of other campuses do not have. As you walk, you get to take in more of the city of Providence, and not just live inside a bubble. Some of the places are a bit far, and because of the hills its feels even farther, but that is okay if you're in shape. my favorite part of the campus is the walk by the river, as some of the RISD buildings (auditorium, 15 West, etc etc) give you a nice view. All in All, the East side is very nice and pretty.

People- so far, everyone i think is pretty normal. (suprise, suprise) but we will see how that might change in the months to come.

Work- Wow. If you are faint of heart, and cannot function if you dont get 8 hours of sleep every night.. i dont think this is the place for you. I have not pulled an all nighter yet, but a few of my friends have already pulled quite a few. The work is hard, im usually in the workroom or studio until 2am, and my usual sleeping time is around 3-4am. crazy eh? What adds more is that i usually have studio starting at 8am and ending at 6pm. simplified- YOU WILL WORK A LOT. no matter what. there just isnt any way to get around it. Unless you half-ass, but if you do that.. prepare to get torn apart in crit. However, there are those "nice" teachers who just skip you if it sucks. Even though i go to sleep so late... i enjoy everything. if you work in the workroom or studio, you are usually not alone so prepare to have a lot of fun. there is a lot of random burst of song, dancing in the workroom, and just friendly talk. It's pretty funny, because most of your conversations at RISD have to do with the amount of homework one has received. You will come to love your section, for everyone has their on little quirks. Studio is long, but veryy helpful. Dont be afraid to challenge yourself, or do stuff you've never done.

Weekends- This is the time you will try and get most of your work done, but also you do get some time to just relax and go places. But here is one thing i have to say bad about RISD. There is almost nothing to do. There is Brown yes, but ummm... ill get to that in a second. You might feel as if you do the same thing every weekend, and that there isnt anything to do. Sadly... it kinda is true. However, since i havent been here that long, i cant exactly say that with complete conviction.

Brown- they like us apparently? but i might just say they like you in the daytime. During the weekends, large crowd of RISD kids begin to swarm brown, and so i think they just get a little annoyed. There are large lines to get into some of the parties, so it feels like you're trying to get into an exclusive bar. I have never felt the need to go and try and party at brown, but one of my friends who had gone to one of the parties said that once she got in, everything was covered in sweat, even the walls were sweating. That doesnt mean that it isnt fun! some of my friends said they have had amazing nights at Brown, it's hit or miss.

I will update this as the weeks go by and new things develop, but this is just a rough outline of RISD in my eyes. I absolutely love this school, and i could never see myself anywhere else. Everyday is challenging, but I am doing something that i enjoy, challenging myself to become a better artist.

Thanks, FT. I hope you do make this a regular post.

it is 3:30 am here, just got out of 3D studio making wire shoes. Done, left about 7 other comrades who are scurrying to finish before crit at 8am.

I would put this in the RISD forum where interested people can find it more easily.

It’s more to help show those who are interested in art school as a whole and to help them understand in order to make a decision.

Still a lot of work…

If anyone wants to ask me a question on risd, the work, etc etc, please dont hesitate to send me questions!

Right now is finals prep, so im working my butt of on all of my final projects and its… quite ridiculous. Thanksgiving was great, took 2 days off, now i have a lot to do

I toured RISD when I was young, too. Eventually decided against an art career, but I will always have a few regrets that I didn’t pursue RISD. :(

Will be very interested to hear more re your experiences there!

P.S. Do they still ask you to draw a bicycle as part of your application portfolio?

Hey sorry! Update: Finals… ugh finals were insane. But got good grades in all my classes  For this semester the all-nigher count was: 4. but then again, i had one of the most rigorous sections for freshman foundation… lucky me.

Dianeski, yes, they still make us do the bike drawing :p
