RISD Pre-College

Hi!

I have read many reviews regarding RISD Pre-College and I have already been accepted. I saw that it is a lot of hard work and that will require many hours of work. However, I have not seen any reviews on how free time is spent. For example, what is the curfew? Are we allowed to do whatever when we do not have class? How is the dorming situation? Is it divided by genders or by major? Also, are rooms double? Can someone please answer my questions I am very worried about how my time there will be spent.

I got you!! I went to RISD Pre-college last summer as an illustration major and I LOVED IT. Prepare for your art and your mind to be changed, challenged, and expanded forever! I’d love to share my experience with you and I’ll answer any questions you’ve got so throw em all at me.

Answers to ur questions so far:

  1. Curfew on Sunday-Thursday is 11pm and Friday-Saturday it's midnight; ends at 5:00am...But "curfew" just means u have to be in ur room; nobody cares if you sleep or not (allnighters are a regular occurrence for some)
  2. If you aren't supposed to be in class, you can be in New York City for all they care! Complete free roam!!
  3. Dorming is random but they send out a questionnaire thingy to help make roomates compatible. You'll either be in 15 West or one of the boarding halls off The Met (the dining hall on college hill). 15 West is the new building Risd bought so it fhas air conditioning and every room has a kitchenette and a bathroom so it's THE PLACE TO BE. The boarding on the hill doesn't have ac and there are shared bathroom for each hall. It's complete luck where you end up but either way you make incredible friends and have an amazing time.
  4. Dorming is mixed majors, I think they try not to put majors together. And you declare if u want gender-specific rooming on ur questionnare they send out.
  5. Rooms vary from single to quadruple and some are suite style (so you might share a room with 1 person, but have 2 other roomates in ur suite)

Reply if u have any more questions, personal or general, abt pre-college, risd, or providence in general!!

Hello! I have a question about RISD pre-college as well–
I applied for the scholarship, and I am currently waiting for the office to get back to me on the amount I will get for the program, if I do receive any. Do you happen to know the selectivity in the amount of people they give full scholarships to? Also, how much did you spend on materials/personal expenses during pre-college?

I’ve been accepted into RISD Pre-college this year too, Majoring in illustration!

Although I’m highkey freaking out as I have to fly from New Zealand to Providence completely alone, I am so excited.

My mom wants to take me to Boston for a few nights the last weekend before we graduate, I was wondering if this would be too difficult if the workload is extremely intensive, especially if it is before finals?

Also, can you opt to have a single room, or is it just randomly chosen? (I value my personal space so much lmao)

Hey, thanks for the amazing reply! This honestly was so helpful.

One last question I have is that can I leave for a overnight trip for Friday and Saturday or only one night?

Thanks so much

Hi! I recently got accepted into RISD Pre-college with a full scholarship. Majoring in fine arts! I’m super excited.
I can answer some of the questions- I’ve read a lot of information about RISD Pre-college and I’ve talked to quite a few RISD pre-college alumni and RISD college students.

RISD’s college and precollege programs are pretty well-known for giving very little scholarships in comparison to other art colleges and universities. I’ve heard that around 5-7% receive any sort of scholarship, and only 2-3% receive a full scholarship.
I have no idea how much personal and material expenses cost, but the Precollege website says that materials can cost up to $800 (which is probably pretty accurate considering that we will be using materials nonstop for over a month).

I’m pretty sure the RISD student handbook says that rooms are just randomly assigned, and they won’t be changed unless in an emergency situation. Hope for the best!

Not exactly sure how the overnight trips work; it’s not really specified too well on their website.

Good luck to everyone and hope to see y’all next month!

Thank you so much, and congratulations on your scholarship!

I can’t believe how fast June is approaching, it’s so exciting!

Hello, my daughter is going to attend RISD precollege this summer 2018. Can you please tell me how was your experience? She is going in to graphic design. Thanks!
