cama....I thought everyone knew.
Juniors on Flatbush:)

This LI girl has limited knowledge of Brooklyn. Of course now that you mentioned it I have heard of the famous Juniors...do you know if it is near Pratt? On Flatbush Ave or in Flatbush Brooklyn? I am probably more interested in this then I should be, maybe to protect the waistline you shouldn't tell me.... however the knowledge might be useful if I have to bring something to someone's house...excuses, excuses...

Cama

Taxguy- Thanks for pointing me to overviews. While looking there I found a thread Paying for RISD where Alie's daughter is in the same boat as my son. They did have luck in speaking w/ Peter Reifler and was reconsidered for aid - this was just last week. She did mention something about tiers or levels. Was wondering what that was about?

The famous Juniors is on Flatbush Ave on the corner of Dekalb.
Good for corned beef sandwiches also. (On rye with mustard:))

BTW....What ever happened to Joe Roberts who chaired the Com Design program?

Thanks for the tip...perhaps after the Passover holiday. Joe Roberts does not chair the Com Design dept. anymore though I think he teaches some classes. Actually he has a decent rep among the students for really knowing his stuff, in spite of himself, (according to my D).

Yeah , I know what you mean.
Roberts and Graham loved my son's portfolio an told him "why do you want to go to Pratt, we can only mess you up here".
The school has some top people who have been successful in their fields in NYC, these guys really know their stuff. Roberts' escapades earned him quite a reputation on campus. He is very capable in his field and has a fantastic command of Design and Illustration. If he likes you you have it made. If not...
Watch out.:)

So exactly what did your S end up doing? You said something about him taking a gap year and then majoring in art history? Where did he end up...did he graduate and if so what is he doing? Always like to hear successful stories about artists.

Cama

After last year's admission cycle where my S was rejected by
Princeton we all re-grouped and decided not to give up and not let
him put aside his dream. The art schools that he prepared so long to
attend came up short with scholarship funds, which was a catalyst in
his desire to change directions and study Art History. Also the
visit to a university convinced him that a Liberal Arts education
would be much more challenging and a better fit. After re-applying
this year here are his results
.

Brown University - Rejected
Columbia University - Accepted

Harvard University - on the Waiting List
Lafayette College -Accepted
Williams College Accepted (Early Write)
Amherst College-Accepted
And last but not least Princeton University- ACCEPTED...And going:)

I said all year that it would just be wonderful for him to get into any of these schools. My wife said she prayed for him to get into all of them.

Congrats! Great results! Go, Tiger!

aparent5......Got the cap, t-shirt and decals already!

Great outcome..congrats!!! what did he do during his gap year or what changed with his application, ( in your opinion) to have all of those acceptances for this year as opposed to last year?

Cama

Last year he got into all the art schools he applied to.
The only other school was Princeton which was a last minute app done during the last 2 weeks of December with the holidays taking up much of our time. This year he worked at RNC for a week, got a museum internship and continued his illustration work for two clients.
As we homeschooled it was a bit difficult to get academics recs but we were able to get 5 letters that were all very persuasive. The clincher was his personnal statement which contained artwork. Some of his work this past year has shown up on at least two NYT best sellers audio books. He also got into the University of St. Andrews and Edinburgh in January. His standardized scores were very good but not what I would think would have gotten him in MIT which favors high math and science testing.

Congrats to your son on being accepted at Princeton.

After making one more phone call to RISD financial aid director and being told no for any scholarship$$, we decided to go ahead anyway
and take the plunge. Just sent RISD deposit Fed Express.

Not taking anything away from Pratt, RISD was a better fit for my son.
It is such a relief to have made a decision!! Thanks to all for your suggestions on the board.

RISD gives aid according to tiers or levels. You have to be considered a 1 , 1 1/2, or a 2 for them to consider you for a better package. Antway it is a great school on a nice hill. Great success to your son:)

Congrats!!!!

nopoisonivy,
Your son sounds like an exceptional young man!!! Congrats to him. The home schooling situation sounds very interesting but I guess that's a subject for another thread.

Pratt’s environment is amazing!!! Clinton Hills is an awesome neighborhood & by no means exclusively res. Myrtle Ave & DeKalb Ave which border the school are lively & fully of business Main streets, and frequently there are block parties with live music/ DJ’s ent. etc. and street fair/ market events. There is an amazing mix of culture, you have Fort Greene park up the road, which is great for running and walking as well as a historical landmark (also a favorite training ground of the Championship X-C team…does RISD have that?) Prospect Park, the HUGE! Brooklyn Library and Brooklyn Museum are a 20 minute walk or quick bus/subway ride away (free membership for students of course). The Manhattan building is right on 14th St. & 6th Ave./ Union Sq. neighborhood- definitely one of the best places in the city, especially for students and city newbies. NYC people? Hello… really? Where do you think the art world is? RISD students can’t commute to NYC for internships…but it’s ok. Ya’ll can pay for your kids to go there (even though I’ve had professors who have taught there and say the education isn’t as wonderful as it supposedly is) and we’ll get the jobs. :D
good luck

Just want everyone to know here that TAXGUY had a daughter that wanted to go to RISD but did not get in the school. He has hated RISD ever since that rejection. That said, Risd is an expensive school. The education is wonderful. You can take classes at Brown after the first year.
