Rising Application Numbers...

What are everyone's thought on recent application numbers, especially the schools that now surpass the Ivies in popularity. Do you think these numbers mean anything:

NYU - 34,457 applied
USC - 29,792 applied
Northeastern - 24,436 applied
Boston College - 22,451 applied
Boston University - 23,240 applied
Harvard - 20,987 applied
Cornell - 20,822 applied
Yale - 19,682 applied
UPenn - 18,282 applied

Any others private school above 20,000, please let me know...

It's interesting that Harvard is the 4th largest in the Boston area

Well, I think it makes sense considering that many kids feel they have no shot at Harvard/Ivies, but have a stronger shot at, say BU and/or BC.

I can't believe Northeastern is so high...can you say safety school much?
Poor NYU!

The size and location of the schools have a lot to do with it. A lot of people are attracted to BU and NYU because of the cities they're in.
Also, if a school is very large, you would expect more people to apply, but it doesn't bring down their acceptance percentage much.

I'd say too many vales looking for safeties in Boston, I also don't understand the over-the-top to school like NYU and BU, great schools with no real campus.

it's disappointing for someone like me who doesn't want a safety out of bc and neu, but those are schools I'm aiming for. Bummer :(

^^^^^^^
More reason to visit the school and keep contact with your counselors

I can't visit. too poor (like I asked my parents, but finances are really hard for us right now)

Be sure to let the school know that you could not visit....it was a financial obstacle for you.....you wish you could. Tell about yourself and your circumstances.....you are not alone.

thanks for the advice, i'll be sure to take it

Be sure your HS counselor and the teachers writing your recs know that you wanted to visit and it was an obstacle and also that you are interested in the school.....not as a safety. Get these folks to understand your circumstances and desires.

Some schools have programs that pay for your trip...
a lot of them are multicultural-based and require and application... I've heard of this for a few LACs, don't know about other schools.

Apply to midwestern/southern schools so I have a better chance!!! :)
