Extracurriculars:

Significant Extracurriculars:
-Tennis: I'm pretty good. I finished top 5 in socal last year in my age group, top 10 in nation... I probably wont be playing AS competitively from now on though because of school and all. Not looking for a scholarship.

-Tennis Community Serivce: This probably should be in the community service section but w/e. This summer I'm going to be heavily involved in two major tennis community projects. First one - I'll be teaching underprivileged kids in Los Angeles how to play tennis under the Safe Passage Program. Second One - I'll be working with a world-respected tennis coach to develop a program to teach OTHER underprivileged kids (in Santa Ana) how to play tennis. Main difference is that the Safe Passage Program is already established while I'll be working (volunteering) from scratch with the second.

-Science Research: I'm going to be doing research intensively (half a day every day this summer) in a microbiomechanics lab at a local university starting this summer and probably continuing into next summer. Hopefully I will enter and do well in Intel/Siemens and/or get research published in some science journal.

Yeah I'm going to have an intense summer haha

Leadership positions:
(Not including volunteer/service work leadership positions mentioned below)
-Asian Cultures Club President - we are active in spurts. we raised over $1000 for the szechuan earthquake victims last year. other than that, nothing too significant

Volunteer/Service Work:
Key Club Treasurer - probably 75 hrs a year or so not including school meetings
Volunteer at a hospital - around 125 hrs
California Scholarship Federation Board/Committee
NHS member

Honors and Awards:
Plenty of school ones such as Departmental Awards in Science/Math
Tennis awards - MVP, sportsmanship, captain beginning sophomore year
Piano - Certificate of Merit Advanced, placed at a festival or two. Nothing special.

Colleges of Interest:

I don't know for sure. Chances are I'm going to UCLA or UCB but I'd like to keep my options open for Harvard, Stanford and MIT.

So do you think I have a fair shot at the Ivies I mentioned? I know I have less EC's than most others on here but I try to go into serious depth in the few that I do (tennis, science - and i try to incorporate community service into my EC's as much as i can). Am I not doing enough of something?

Thanks for your expert advice. I appreciate it.

p.s. go lakers/kobe

H, S, and M are all extraordinarily difficult to make it into, but you would be cheating yourself if you didn’t reach for more than UCLA/UCB. Reach out for the very top schools; your academics, test scores are superb and your ECs actually sounds better than average. I think that you have way above-average chances at HSM, and I wouldn’t be surprised if you got into one of them. I would encourage you to apply to some other fantastic schools that aren’t quite as difficult to get accepted by, perhaps Columbia, Dartmouth, and UChicago.

Oh and Lakers stink.

Thanks for the encouragement monstor344. I’m sure I don’t have “way above-average” chances at HSM, though the Lakers do have way above-average chances of winning the championship lol.

Anyone else ? You guys know you want to chance me. please

wow your in great shape congrats
honestly, just keep doing what you’re doing and I’d take chem junior yr over physics cuz u just did honors chem

Why is it that SoCal Asian kids all think about the big schools? If you gunned for the top LACs (Amherst, Williams, Pomona, etc.), you would have much less competition getting into college and have significant athletic and geographical hooks. Instead, you all head like lemmings into the jaws of HYPSM and then get slaughtered on D-Day, and end up going to Berkeley or UCSD. I see this over and over again.

How about breaking the mold, and being creative in your college choices? Even Dartmouth would be a refreshing idea. I’ll throw out a few more: Swarthmore, Wesleyan, Harvey Mudd, USMA (West Point). Seriously. PM me for more ideas.

Bumping one last time…btw this is the info about my amazing close friend who wrote just this one post, not actually me. 2380 is just a dream for me…

I would keep at the tennis as much as possible. It seems to me that being one of the top 10 tennis players in the nation is a much better hook than the other statistics which are good but typical for applicants to HYP.

Whoo go Kobe.
Your tennis is looking sick with your ranking and especially the community service (H and S will love that), I would definitely keep up the good work.
In general, I think you are on the right track, especially because you don’t sound too typical of an asian :]

You’re practically in at UCB and UCLA, and you have very impressive stats for HYPS. Definitely apply, and I think you will make it into at least one of the fourth. At Cornell, yu probably have 60%+ chance. Columbia - 50%, Brown- 50%, and Dartmouth- 50%.
Swat admissions are difficult to estimate, but you are competitive.
Good luck!

Wow, you did great aznjohnny, But you know getting into college is really different but i believe you’re above average guy… You really have great opportunities, and more opportunities to come I wish!!!you’re really good by having straight A’s, maybe you deserve more than UCLA/UCB however you need to follow what it is in your heart… Harvard is really a good choice and I hope you can still make it on top once you get into College!!!GOod Luck!!!

Unless your tennis=playing ability is truly as advertised (top 10 in nation), your chances of admission to the top tier of schools is in the low single digits. You need to ignore the people throwing around percentages of “50% for Columbia”. Totally ignores the reality of college admissions for Asian students. Otherwise, you are headed for nothing but disappointment come April 1st, 2015.

jamescchen: In the final rankings of 2008 I was top 10 in the nation in my age group. However I am sure that I will not be nearly as competitve in a year and a half when I will be applying to college. However I will definitely be good enough to be recruited on the relatively weak DIII teams of Harvard and MIT (though not Stanford).

However (sorry for the mutliple “however”'s) I would much prefer getting into a top Ivy through regular admissions since I don’t think I’ll be able to keep up the vast time commitment that college tennis teams require.

So my question for you is, what can I do further to increase my chances of being accepted to HMS?

I am sure that a fair percentage of Asian students get accepted into the top-tier Ivies…I don’t believe that the “Asian situation” is as dismal as you describe it to be.

Maybe I’m completely wrong about this, but I’m guessing that on a weak D3 tennis team, you probably won’t be devoting insane amounts of time to your sport. Regardless, your chances without a hook are still a lot better than the low single digits. That alone suggests that you have lower chances than the delusional dreamers 1800 SATs and no hooks. A 2380 certainly puts you above lots of other applicants right off the bat, even if you’re Asian.

But going back to your tennis ability…Certainly even being anywhere near the top 10 in your age group would get you recruited by top athletic schools. The fact is that it appears as though as you have a hook that’s easily attainable and would essentially guarantee you spots into practically every school you apply to (except maybe the Stanfords/Dukes).

To everyone who doubts his ECs: Being top 5 in socal is an insanely amazing achievement. It’d take alot of skill and dedication to get there. Heck, I’ve been at it for like 5 years, and I can only get around 110ish.

Are you top 5 in 14s or 16s?

im top 10 in the 16s right now

u can probably figure out who i am, dont tell anyone lol

but anyways i dont think the admissions officers will know that socal is so competitive at tennis

Haha, how did your school do in CIF?

I’m pretty sure if you talk to the coaches, they can push for your acceptance. Everyone knows, socal and florida= tennis.

our school got second to last in league lol

but i made it to 4th round in individuals

how about yours?

Lol, we had TO in our league, so we got seeded badly. Then we played Harvard-Westlake in first round and got owned. xD

Still, I think you have a very good chance at those schools. Do you know Denis Lin? He got into Stanford with a 1/3 scholarship or something.
