hey guys
i'm a rising junior, and i'm traveling to NY this 4th-of-july weekend and my 'rents want me to visit a couple of colleges on the way.. i'm fairly new to this process and i havn't visited any colleges so this'll be a first time.

my stats are 4.0 gpa.. expecting around 2200 SAT.. do a varsity sport.. play a couple of instruments (piano and clarinet).. heavily involved in church and community service club (newsletter writer for both.. planning board for both).. etc. if you need more specifics i'll repost again

i'm more of a humanities-type guy than a math/science guy so i'd like to go to a school strong in humanities :)

i'm crosscountrying MA on the way there and we're going to buffalo so cutting across NY too.. any suggestions on where to visit?

and do i just drop by and visit or do they have scheduled open-houses? really confused on this part. thanks!

Cornell, U of Rochester, maybe Syracuse
Colgate and Hamilton if you like LACs

They usually have escorted tours daily. Call the admissions office ahead of time to find out the tour schedule. Stop by the admissions office so they can load you up with maps and info. They also have scheduled open houses but it is unlikely they would have one this time of year. Check with them.

Amherst also if you like LACs.

What are you looking for? Big? Small? Private? Public? Label? I'm assuming you'll be traveling the Mass Pike & NYS Thruway. Bennington College isn't too far off track. Siena College in Loudonville, NY(albany), lots of SUNY schools, Syracuse Univ, Hamilton, Ithaca... there are a dozen schools in the Albany area. Do a quick search on collegeboard.com to get a list. Check the websites. May not be anyone around for the long weekend, but you can get an idea of the "feel" (rural, metro, etc) Good luck !!

If you'll be in NYC you should check out NYU. Otherwise Cornell and Colgate :)

Colgate, Cornell, NYU, Cornell, Tufts, Amherst, Williams, Brown, Dartmouth, Middlebury.

If you're only going to look at couple of colleges, pick the larger ones on this trip. Small schools are going to be dead on the 4th of July week, unless they have a summer program (preferably an academic one, not sports.) Be sure to e-mail the admissions office to confirm that tours are available during the holiday week.

joe, I'd suggest that you try to sit in on an information session and to take a tour at the colleges you visit. Usually these don't require reservations but you can check the colleges' websites for details.

Two schools in the area that would seem to fit your profile are Hamilton and Williams. Both strong in humanities and partial to kids with sports involvement. What midwesterner said is true -- the small colleges are not in session in the summer but a visit would give you an idea of what an eastcoast LAC is like.

Williams, Union, Colgate, Hamilton, Cornell.
