Hi everyone I’m an Indian Male in TN and I would like to know how competitive I am at a few schools.
My stats are :
3.45 UW GPA (this can become a 3.55 at the end of 1st semester senior year).
4.04 W GPA (this can become a 4.13 at the end of 1st semester senior year).
35 ACT (36 Superscore)
1420 PSAT
SAT 2’s Scores Pending (Math 2 & Physics)
Full IB Diploma Curriculum (5 HL classes and 1 SL)
EC’s (simplified list):
National Honor Society
Kappa Honor Society
3 years varsity soccer
3 years MUN
2 years Robotics
2 years Knowledge Bowl
2 years Speech and Debate
1 year History Bowl
2 years Badminton Club
Attended Advanced Space Academy for 1 week, earned one undergrad credit.
Attended Harvard Summer School for 7 weeks, earned eight undergrad credits.
10 Week Research with a College Professor
2 year Intern at an IT firm
Secretary Badminton Club
Co-President Astronomy Club
Co-President of ACT/SAT Tutoring group
I’ve won a few regional awards in Knowledge Bowl/History Bowl/Debate, and qualified for National Geo Olympiad, but no major awards.
Trend: Very Good 9th grade (3.7) , OK 10th Grade, (3.45) Bad 11th Grade (3.3) , Hopefully Very Good 12th Grade (4.0)
School doesn’t have class rank.
Colleges I’m looking at: (these don’t contain my reaches, this is more of a realistic/decent shot list)
UIUC
UMD
Purdue
Wisconsin-Maryland
Carnegie Mellon
Rutgers
USC
UT-Austin
Ohio State
RPI
Penn State
Brandeis
My prefered major is Computer Science (so engineering schools), but my 2nd choice would be astronomy.
Thank you!
You have a bad sense of where you stand. You’re going to be waitlisted/rejected by a majority of these schools because of your GPA. UIUC, USC, UT-Austin, RPI, and Brandeis are all reach/high reaches. You have no chance at CMU (the most competitive computer science school in the country). If you think these are targets, you’re in for major disappointment next year.
@jarrett211 shut up, you probably go to a community college lol.
I think you have a decent chance and though some of these schools are reaches, none are “high reaches” as jarrett says. Hopefully you work hard on your essays and your EC’s are good.
My only concern for you is your downward trend throughout HS. Your gpa got lower and lower and that might not be a good sign for colleges.
nevertheless, goodluck!
Thanks for your feedback @jarrett211 @yc073000

I am as a matter of fact going to the University of Chicago. Clearly you don’t recognize the seal, nor did you obviously look into the dozens of people I’ve helped on this site. But no matter. I don’t appreciate what you just said, but since you said, you clearly don’t know your stuff.
I agree with jarrett211. GPA is not high enough for UIUC OOS in computer science in COE. But OP might have a slightly better chance at UIUC in their CS + astronomy program in the College of LAS (GPA still an issue). Link is here: http://catalog.illinois.edu/undergraduate/las/comp-science/#majortext
Just as a note. OP you might not be able to include your fall semester grades before college application deadlines. Some colleges/universities have a 1 Dec deadline. Some have a 1 Nov deadline for scholarship consideration.
Also, is your family able to pay the OOS costs?
Yes they are able to pay @MerryLee
Do you think the CS+A program would be beneficial down the road in relation to grad school? Also, If I performed well in this program initially, would be there be a chance to transfer to COE? @MerryLee
I do not know about the grad school factor or the transfer to COE chance. You could try posting these questions on the UIUC reddit page.
Good Luck & OOS is $38k+/yr
