Rising senior=stressing out!

Hello! I want to thank you first of all for reading this and hopefully helping me out or giving me a few tips! I am a rising senior which presents the start of the application process and I'm worried about my chances of getting into some of my choices.

We're still looking at schools but these are my choices so far:
1. Elon
2. UNC-Asheville
3. Appalachian
4. Meredith
5. NCSU

Background:

GPA: 3.65 weighted

I took AP US History this past year and got a C first semester and a B for second semester but I think I got a B for overall. My senior year I'm taking AP Psychology. Of my 3 years in high school I've always had honors classes and always got an A or B.

SAT: 1540
CR-470
Math-510
Writing-560
**I am retaking the SAT in October and plan on taking the ACT in September. I currently have a tutor and am working in practice books by myself at home.

ECs: Student council member (3 years), Academy of Finance member (4 years-includes fundraising, taking required courses for all 4 years (a college business course senior year), a 180-hour summer internship junior year, and a trip to New York senior year), women's soccer team (JV 2 years, Varsity 1 year), CASL Club Soccer (Challenge league) 9+ years.

Employment/Activities:
(Summer 2010) State Employee's Credit Union: 180-hour internship
(Fall 2009-Present) Babysitter for 2 young girls
(Fall 2009) CASL U7 Attack Assistant Coach
(Summer 2009)
1. 7 Oaks Swim Club: snackbar attendant
2. Boston University School of Medicine: Biotechnology SummerLab (1 week-long camp)
3. Boston University: Soccer Camp
(Fall 2008-Spring 2009) NCYSA/CASL Referee

comments/concerns?!

Thank you

Sounds like you have a plan… You must know that you are at or below the low end of the accepted range of many of your choices for the SAT so study like crazy (but a lot of people do better on one of the standardized test than the other), so be sure to take the ACT as soon as you can.

A 3.65 WGPA will be harder to change drastically. So get good grades… but work on the SAT / ACT daily.

ELON - not at all likely
NCSU - unlikely
UNC-Asheville - maybe but unlikely (with stronger SAT)
Appalachian - maybe
Meredith - most likely of the group, but still only maybe

you might want to look into
Fayetteville State University
Elizabeth City State University

or with slightly better SAT
Western Carolina University
East Carolina University

Hang in - I know how hard it can be at some NC High Schools

Thank you.

What would you say is holding me back?

Not quite sure what your asking…

If you asking why you might not be accepted to the schools listed then the answer would be very low SAT score, low WGPA, and weak EC. Awards?

The biggest change you can make at this point is to improve your SAT score.

Let me know if I misunderstood your question…

No thats what I was asking, thank you and sorry for the misunderstanding

In going back over your post I had an observation and a question…

First - the title of your thread “Rising senior=stressing out!” - I wanted to remind you that a little competitive stress is a fine thing but being “stressed out” should not be what your high school years are all about… I hope you take a breath and remember to find giggle or two in the hard work. I would encourage you to study for the SAT/ACT with some good friends if you can… It’s just harder to be stressed out when your helping someone and they are helping you.

Are You Sure that your 3.65 is your WGPA? — You said “Of my 3 years in high school I’ve always had honors classes and always got an A or B”. (Sounds like 3.65 might be closer to your unweighed GPA). That Would Make A Huge Difference…

Last thought - remember that stats and facts here on CC don’t even remotely reflect life in the real world. There are thousands of schools that will be happy to have an involved student like you. When you ask opinions here, people will try and help by comparing yourself to other peoples statistics and non of us are just statistics. Just open your eyes, do what you need to do, and remember to enjoy your life…

This is the first thing to check into. The second is to raise your SAT (or ACT). With the prep you are doing, you should be able to increase your chances at UNCA and Meredith, and consider the other UNC ancillaries like Greensboro and Wilmington. Personally, I think your ECs are fairly strong, and with a few hundred points or so on your SAT, a school like Meredith–which focuses far more on EC accomplishment than other schools on your list (a national debate qualifier from my school was rejected from Asheville)–might be very happy to have you. (I’m a sucker for Meredith since they have a pretty decent cafeteria and the loveliest dining hall staff.)

Hmm, maybe you’re right about my GPA (hopefully). It’s been a while since I’ve looked it up. I appreciate your concern, I just hope that I have a competitive application. Thank you both so much!

3.65 W isn’t too bad, but I suppose it could’ve been better. Your ECs are great though. Like the others said, you HAVE to raise your SAT scores, or alternatively get a good ACT score.
