Rising Senior Summer Crisis!

Hi there,

I'm a junior and I'm really interested in environmental science. I get all A's at my competitive school (except for a B+ in calc last semester... boo) and I don't know my ranking, but it's somewhere at least above 10%. After much thought, I think I will be stating that as my major when college app time comes in the fall (either that, or undeclared. I am extremely indecisive...). So I've been trying to find something to do this summer for months, like an internship, job, volunteer work, or program that relates to this field, but I wasn't accepted to the two things I applied to and pretty much everything else has passed deadlines and such. And I've looked on the internet for countless hours looking for opportunities, too.

I know it's really important to have a deep interest/focus in something to get into the top colleges, and I'm kind of hoping to start some sort of personal project by the end of summer (I realize I shouldn't be intentionally looking to start something but that I should be trying different things and following where it leads me, but this is my goal). But I haven't found solid summer plans yet! I was hoping that some kind of science-related activity would allow me to branch off later into something bigger and better for colleges to see, but that's not going to happen. I have no idea what to do and I'm really panicking, since it's already finals week. I received a note from my future international relations teacher about a World Affairs Summer Institute in my local area, and I'd like to do it, but I'm afraid that my college app will look inconsistent because of my scattered activities... I'm in a few clubs that focus on totally different interests. I'm not even sure if I'm interested in politics! However, I am still considering participating in it. If I do, though, I would not be able to attend this other ice field research program that I'd LOVE to do but that I haven't applied to yet (I emailed the director of the program with a question 2 weeks ago but he never replied to me...).

I realize that this rant was very unorganized, sorry about that. I'm just afraid that colleges will look at me like, huh? What does this girl even want to do? Especially since I took a community college analytical trig + astronomy course in my freshman year and an AP environmental science course last summer. It's really stressing me out that I can't even try out different things without fearing that I won't get into any top college I'd like to attend.

Frankly, I am not sure what to do. Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated (especially if you know any environmental/other science programs that are still open? (: ).
