Risk of redundancy in college essay

Hey all,

I’m applying to college in the fall but the Common App essay is only going to be important for 2 of the colleges on my apply list. They are two of my tippy top choices so I really want to write a good one. I have a couple of essay ideas and will probably end up making one the Common App essay and switch up the others for supplements. Working on the supplements right now.

My question is, if I’m applying to music school, would it be a poor idea to write about taking voice lessons for my common app essay? Most of these schools require “personal statements” for the music school supplement. I know I can relate those more to the schools as I’ve been very picky about the schools I apply to and know exactly why I would choose each. However, I like the idea of developing this particular essay topic for the general admissions committee at these two selective schools (also looking for merit money here and very aware of how important the essay is.)

Bump. Working on my essays and I’m trying out a couple different topics for my common app to see which one works… but would still like to know if said topic is a possibility due to the reasons outlined in my original post.

Hi OP,
Lol, DS is having similar issues as he is writing an essay about music and a supplemental essay which also focuses on music. I like both essays, but have suggested him to pick a different focus for the supplemental, as it will show a different aspect of his life/experience.
I think it is better to use the essays to showcase the “full” (as much as possible) you. Of course music means a lot to you and is a huge part of your life, maybe try to use music as a theme and tell other facets of you? Good luck!

You can submit the common app to one set of schools, then change it and submit to others. (Unless this has changed in the last 3 years.)

I would try to use all that real estate as effectively as possible so say everything I wanted to say, but only once.

@gardenstategal your last sentence is very helpful. I think that is a good thing to keep in mind.
