I’ve been having a very hard time choosing an essay topic. The one idea that I think may work would be to talk about a class trip last year where students from my school went to Des Moines to observe the caucuses and work on campaigns (I worked for Kucinich, no I didn’t think he had a chance). It was truly one of the most amazing and influential experiences of my life, but the topic inherently has to do with politics. Could I make this essay work? I would try to make it more a critique on political apathy then trying to push any agenda. I’m thinking it could work for some schools (Reed, NYU, Northwestern?) but not others (Harvard, Columbia, Barnard). Comments?

It's the kind of topic that could work for any college. Just make sure to focus on how the trip affected you -- your self knowledge, your perspective on life and on politics. Don't write it as a travelogue.

And don't write it as a condemnation of apathy (done to death) or a lecture on your candidate.

It's a great idea but don't pound the Kucinich thing too hard....might **** off a moderately conservative leader (or someone who doesn't like short people). Don't preach either...you have to walk a fine line.
