I was thinking of writing a play script or something along those lines for my common app essay. I have a pretty good idea of how the whole think will play out, and half of it written already. I was wondering if this too risky, considering that this is supposed to be an essay?
I think, as long as it addresses the prompt just as much as an essay would, this is probably the good kind of creative, not the annoying gimmicky kind of creative. However, it might depend on the school. UChicago, for example, is known for its creative essay questions, so I’d be surprised if they were unhappy with a script just because it was a script. But conceivably there could be other schools that are very buttoned-up and into following instructions.
