I really want to live in Risley when i go to cornell this fall. Can anyone here tell me what it's like to live there? what are the people like? What are the rooms like? What are the bathrooms like? Stuff like that
Also tips for getting into Risley?
Thanks

My son is very happy in Risley. He is a freshman math major. He has found lots of great friends in a wide variety of majors. The extra perk of having a dining hall (though small and more limited) in the building for lunch and dinner Monday through Friday is not a bad thing either.

In recent years, there have been fewer applicants for Risley than rooms available. I can’t guarantee that will be the case this year, but it was last year. If you select Risley and apply to live there, you are likely to get a room in the dorm. They also have a significant number of singles, though some are especially small. The rooms in Risley are quirky. No two are exactly alike. The bathrooms are shared by the hall and are coed. There are two showers, two toilets, and two sinks in each bathroom (at least the ones I’ve seen). It doesn’t seem to be a problem for anyone.

I like the distribution of kids from all four undergraduate years. Some kids will choose to stay in Risley all the way through (I suspect that my son will). Others will move there later. It is also the closest dorm on north campus to the bridge.

Tonight is the Yule Ball. Risley is very popular this weekend!

thanks for the reply! the bathroom thing concerns me though. are they all coed? or just some? I’m perfectly fine with a coed dorm, but coed bathrooms concern me a little. it’s definitely not what im used to…

I think there is one hall on the dorm that is all male, one that is all female. Overall, the building and bathrooms are coed. If you can visit and check it out, do that. It really doesn’t seem to be a problem. People don’t all use the bathrooms the same time. As spread out as the halls are (lots of singles, some doubles), there really isn’t excessive demand all at once. I haven’t heard my son say that he has ever had to wait to use the bathroom or shower for any length of time. You can always go down the hall to the next one. Visiting would be a good idea. It’s an older building. Kids choose it for the culture and the social environment. Sorry that the link says redirect. It’s the Risley.org website.

ok thanks! i’ll definitely try to visit. my mom has a reunion coming up in june and i think i might go with her to check out the campus again

Not sure whether any programs use the building in June, since it isn’t air conditioned. You might want to try to make special arrangements to see Risley then. Also, don’t miss any deadlines for program house or dorm applications. I don’t remember when those are due. Best of luck wherever you end up!
