In addition, UC has one of the first snd foremost coop programs in the USA. For example, for design, they have a 1 and one half year PAID coop program for all design majors. RIT has coop too EXCEPT for their school of imaging arts, which graphic and new media design is houses. The reason for making this optional is that they don't have that many coops; and thus, they can't guarantee a coop for all students, unlike that of Cincinnati.

Admittedly, in most other undergrad majors, RIT is, in my opinion superior to Cincinnati. In fact, Cincinnati is really a "third tier" school overall. However, the School of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning at UC is well known and has some great rankings.

taxguy, usually the girls like the ratio and it's the guys complaining... glad to hear things went well at the review. I'm sure your d will get in at RIT and all her schools. She probably already has a gut feeling about which school she prefers but doesn't want to verbalize it. Let her revisit in the spring, maybe do an overnight. My d was reluctant to talk about it at school coz kids thought she was crazy to consider it - so many classmates stay her in NJ or go to fun/party schools like Penn State or U Del.One teacher actually told her "you may have gotten in, but you have to stay in" - insinuating that she would fail out (my d got a 4.0 last qtr so she just laughs when I remind her what her art studio teacher said).

If your d was very social/partier in HS, she may not like RIT or CMU but prefer SU. My d decided not to apply to CMU but has a classmate there and it sounds like a similar atmosphere to RIT. While some of her friends at other schools are out partying on weeknights, she's working on projects/writing papers. My d misses going dancing/clubbing but eventually she'll be old enough to go to clubs in Rochester, I guess. Around here, and in NYC, they have under 21 nights.

I hear you about the coop - it was disappointing to hear that GD students didn't coop either but my d plans to do internships over the summer. In fact, she has a promising offer from a magazine in NYC for this summer but their policy is that the college has to give college credit for internships. When we looked online, RIT offers credit to GD SENIORS (after completion of so many GD classes). I'm hoping she can get permission and intern a few days a week and take a summer class at the same time. Would be a good experience.

Jerzglmom, If my daughter decides to visit RIT, can she meet your daughter for questions and comments about RIT?

As for my daughter being social, she is social but NOT a social butterfly. She is in a magnet program, and she works HARD!

taxguy,
I did the RISD pre-college program for 6 weeks over the summer which is set up to be a lot like the freshman year RISD. If you have any questions about the school at all i'd be happy to answer.

MandiNY: Although I do believe that RIT has a great photography department, so does RISD. What made you choose RIT over RISD, especially after you attended a 6 week session? Something must have turned you "off" to RISD.

Taxguy,
I had a wonderful experience at RISD and the people I met made it that much better, but I felt RIT had more to offer in the photography department as far as the facility and the variety of photography majors. I also want more of a campus life with students studying in other departments not just in the arts. RIT has both which I find more accomodating to my needs. I also feel RISD has somewhat of an elitist attitude and at times that may not be the best environment for me to be learning in. However I am still applying to RISD just because of my inspirational experience there. RIT and RISD are two very different VERY excellent schools, but when I went to visit RIT it just felt right.

taxguy, I mentioned to my d that I had been chatting with you and she said she'd be happy to show your d around - as long as she realizes schoolwork comes first. Sounds like they both work hard. My d has a full day of classes on Th & just one class (a design class) on F so Thurs/Fri might be a good time to visit. Just email me when she's ready.

Jerzgrlmom, Thanks :)

if any of u are planning to play tennis, their outdoor tennis courts suck. there are all these cracks on them, at least when i played a little while back.
