I'm trying to choose between RIT and RPI, and one of the things that I'm interested in for RIT is the software engineering degree (which isn't offered at RPI). If I understand it correctly, it looks like it's more along the lines of what I'm interested in (code design/creation, rather than looking at it in a more abstract way). Am I looking at it correctly, and are there any other major differences? How would job placement be for an RIT software engineering degree versus an RPI computer science degree?

Sorry, RIT’s College Confidential community hasn’t exactly taken off yet.

Even though I came in as a CS major, I can’t speak too much about how it compares to SE [full disclosure: ended up in infosec]. They DO have a lot of overlapping courses, which is hilarious when you consider the intense rivalry between the programs. But yes, you’re going to get a highly level design perspective from SE and more calc/theory from CS. Both are fantastic programs, and I know people from both who have turned down ~90k job offers.

Job placement wouldn’t vary too much. I would say that RPI probably has a bigger reputation in the New England and around the Ivies [you can blame DI hockey distribution for that], but beyond that you’ll have no trouble getting a good job from either school if you do well. When I was on co-op in Raleigh my roommate was an RPI comp sci grad, and was earning as much as my coworkers.

Bottom line: RIT is heavily recruited by a lot of businesses. End up with decent grades, a solid co-op and some good interview skills and you’ll be fine.

^ does RIT do anything to develop those good interview skills?

from the RIT Coop page :
