RIT vs VT vs Purdue vs WPI vs UT

have you visited purdue? i visited and absolutely hated it, so i would make sure you see it before you even consdier applying there.

What didn't you like about the place?

It was mainly location and the "type" of school i percieved it to be. Quite honestly, the school is in the middle of a corn field, in my opinion. And if you go more than a few miles off campus, you hit corn, wheat, and thats about it. Also, the dorms are old and "oldfashioned". The building I was in was split into two seperate sides, girls on one boys on the other. Boys could only get to a girl side, with a girl and the girl had to sign him in, and vice versa. Can only be on opposite side until a certain time at night, then had to leave.
Just my thoughts.

^ Haha. At least they have girls! Really, the tech schools are seriously lacking girls... My son doesn't seem to care (has girlfriend at home) but I think it doesn't look nearly as fun as either LACs or universities. (He, however, much preferred to be in with techie kids.)

Also, Purdue has corn fields because it's in the midwest. No surprise there. Nice people in the midwest though!

I can't say that I loved the housing at any of the schools we looked at. My son LUCKED OUT with a single at WPI, but many, many kids were force-tripled. RPI also has forced triples and regular, plain old dorms. (Both schools have nice advising/tutoring/academic support IN the dorms though. Nice.) RIT had awful dorms too. All their lounges converted to "rooms." Even worse housing after freshman year.

I'm thinking of going for VT and WPI.

But it doesn't seem like the best choice USNWR and general rep wise?

don't just go by the USNWR. those rankings are skewed. just because its a "top ten school" doesn't mean that it is the right school for you. yea, a schools repuatation is important, but it's not all that matters. if you really like VT and WPI, then go for it. they both have great programs, regardless oftheir rankings.

Well, the only way I can get a taste of the school is via theu.com .. That's about it really ...

What is your total list like, or are you only applying to 2 schools?

Does anyone have any feedback about Bucknell or the University of Vermont, other than what the glossy say? Thanks in advance.

a few comments~ Legend, listen to swoopes...and DON'T listen to USNWR..it's finally catching on how really inaccurate that whole system of ranking is!( and some say corrupt)
sammy~ in my humble opinion there is NO comparison between Bucknell and UVM.( see my pitiful threads on UVM) based on the experiences of those i reported and others i've known there, it is definitely not a solid place socially nor academically. PM me if you like.

weenie, my total list is:

Columbia
Cornell
U Michigan
Lafayette College
Carnegie Mellon U
Rice U
Georgia Tech
Rensselaer Polytechnic Instt.
U Calif Berkeley, LA, San Diego, Irvine
U Illinois Urbana

That it an excellent list for computer engineering. Quite a diverse group in terms of size and climate and culture.

I would say the following would be your best options for reaches:
Cornell
Carnegie Mellon
Rice
Michigan

Berkeley is almost impossible to get into OOS. Don't bother.

Wow. That's a LOT of schools to do applications for, but if you're up for it I'm sure you'll end up someplace great in the end.

But, if 20LEGEND still plans on applying to UCLA, UCI, and UCSD, he may as well check off Berkeley also and pay the additional fee, since it's the same application.

Actually, I was thinking of dumping Irvine and going for Berk, LA and San Diego...

And is it actually that hard to get into UCB OOS? Beyond even a reach?

Yes, but worth a shot.

I'll tick the box then :).

What're the class sizes at Purdue like?

Yet another Q, important factor for me is recruitment upon graduation. Is VT good for it?
