safe area? anyone know about it?

Yeah, it’s safe. Columbia owns half the buildings and security regularly patrols the spot.

Is it safe going to and from the 125th st. subway?

there’s a subway stop at 116th street right at columbia’s entrance, so if there were any concern, there’s no need to go by foot to 125th

Yeah, it’s a safe subway stop, too. It’s pretty quiet up there. The most exciting thing happening at 125 & Broadway is the new Applebee’s.

I always hear about muggings around 110. It seems like the creeps hang out south of campus.

125th street is not that safe. Friend got mugged at “gunpoint” on 120th and Amsterdam. That area is sketchy and students definitely don’t travel north that often, so probably why muggings take place around 110.

125th & Broadway, beardtax. Broadway side isn’t bad at all.

Why is gunpoint in quotes? Is that a euphemism or something?

What do you guys think of Carlton Arms (362 riverside drive). Its around 109th st. It looks kinda far off campus to me. I was considering looking for an apartment closer.

Seriously?

Frat row and the back and the back of Butler are on 114th Street, five blocks away. Is that too far to walk?

I have no idea how far is too far. It will be my first time living in a real city.

My freshmen dorm at my current school was literally like 40 feet away from the building i had all my classes in. My apartment right now at my current school is only 1 block away from campus.

Broken - That’s not far at all, and you’ll be able to do get most of your food and basic necessities shopping done on the way. By NY standards it’s a very reasonable walk.

125th and Broadway is still not safe. Look at google maps, the subway tracks start right at 121st and the area isn’t particularly nice. I don’t know crime statistics but undergrads rarely venture north.

“Gunpoint” because most muggers don’t actually have guns, but they pretend to by sticking something in a sweatshirt.

Mmm, I guess we’ll agree to disagree. Undergrads go to Patrick Ryan’s and places like that all the time. It’s surprisingly chill.

362 Riverside Drive Carlton Arms…I know this months after the post…but I despise this building so much that it prompted me to make an account and reply to your post. this building is atrocious…I dont even know where to begin. The staff is rude and treat you like you are in kindergarten…y are disrespectful to students, I have witnessed the superintendent Ron yelling at several tenants over the time i have been here. They are on some kind of power trip…they cant even press the button to buzz you in the front door and instead just stare at you for 5 minutes as you fumble with your bags and try to find your keys after a long day. TheThe accommodations are awful, you can find something far better on the market…and the shared living areas; the kitchen and bathrooms are filthy…people don’t clean up after themselves. Avoid at all costs.

I actually live there now and have none of the problems you mentioned. My room is huge! Its really nice, and was renovated over the summer. My suite is cleaned weekly. The common room is vacuumed, the bathroom is cleaned, and the kitchen. Sometimes if you leave dishes in the sink, the janitor will even wash them.

I’ve been to one suite on east campus, and although the location is nice, our rooms are much bigger.

362 riverside drive is a piece of dog meat.

i lived there for 2 semesters. the floors creek. there is not sufficient air circulation (i woke up at night once gasping for air). the walls make noises due to the mice. oh and speaking of mice, you’ll have lots of furry friends running across your floor to accompany you in your studies.

i slept in butler library and the engineering school building MANY TIMES by choice because a sofa in the middle of campus was better than my dorm

i’ve been here for four months and have yet to see a mouse.

I wanted to add, for anybody looking at this thread in the future, that 125 and Broadway is totally safe, as is the 125th subway stop. I’m a Barnard alum, and now live in an apartment on Broadway between Lasalle and Tiemann. I use the 125th 1 stop at least twice every day, at all hours. We have some awesome restaurants, are VERY close to the excellent Harlem Fairway and the neighborhood is absolutely fine. Anybody who says otherwise has never lived here. Yeesh.

i agree. this thread has a lot of FUD in it.
