Riverside vs. Santa Cruz

I speak of SC from experience: I'm a freshperson there. So, being that I AM a freshperson, I only have a few months of experience (since about August last year). It was pretty cold for a few weeks, dipping down to the low 40's/30's, but yeah, it doesn't stay there. Average low probably is in the 50's.

My goodness, stayoutofriverside. The sal knows what she is doing -- her major motivation right now is figure skating, so she chose to go to a decent school (UCR over CSU San Bernardino) to pursue BOTH of her dreams. She is very devoted to her skating, and it's paying off. She's been a top contender at the national championship qualifiers (for the Olympics).

As for my high school teacher -- what difference does it make? For what it's worth, he did all those other things -- including the succesful business he's still a partner of -- and /chose/ to teach high schoolers. He is a very good teacher, and he really loves what he does, which turns into engaged students (always good) and a great AP score track record. Going to Riverside had nothing to do with him being at the high school. He was an alum who felt the calling to teach.

"stayoutofriverside: Do you know anything about the Honors College or Honors Program within UCR?"

Yes. Honors Program gives you access to several courses that are available exclusively to honors students. It also gives you access to a few regular classes that have a professor teach the discussion (vs. a TA). It also look good on a resume, even though nobody knows what the hell it is. Finally, they have a bunch of required Honors activities/meetings so you can mingle with the top whatever-percent students in your class who are "somewhat less retarded" academically compared to "just plain retarded," which describes the general UCR student body. Finally, being in the Honors Program lets you stay in the Honors wing of the dorm, which honestly, is probably louder than the regular halls. All in all, the Honors Program is just another monkey operation at UCR, but it's clearly advantageous to be a part of it.

With regard to Undecided's comments, I see your point. Just speaking from experience, the salutatorian of a HS generally has better college prospects than UCR....going to UCR hinders many opportunities, especially professional ones. If she's truly an Olympic contender, she can find training ANYWHERE. If she qualified for the Olympics, good for her...if she doesn't, well, she's just an excellent ice skater who goes to UC Riverside. With regard to your HS teacher, I think it's great to find a dedicated public school teacher, regardless of where they went to school.

Stay out of Riverside

stayoutofriverside, its very heart warming to see someone hate Riverside with a passion! I also like ur name... lol

Anyway, which is a better school for Computer Engineering? UCSC or UCR?

From what I understand they still use vacuum tubes and punchcards at UCR.

Stay Out of Riverside

Which med school did you attend and where did you go for undergrad? Are you enjoying the wonders of slave labor aka residency?

As this is a public forum, I choose not to discuss those issues here. Yes, I'm a resident. If you have any questions about chooosing a BS/MD program from HS or about the UCR/UCLA program, feel free to message me using the private e-mail function of this web forum.

Stay out of Riverside

No I'm a college student actually, and I'm not thinking of medicine per se, just curious.

stayoutofriverside: Did you ever attend or graduate from UCR?
What experience do you have with UCR?

Gee, some people don't get the hint. Read my previous post in this thread. Suffice it to say, I have enough experience with UCR to express the opinions that I have thus far. I would be happy to answer any questions about the campus or its programs to any individuals who might consider going there over another school.

Stay out of Riverside

My cousin goes to UCR and she hates it there. Why would anyone build a college in such a wasteland, let alone live there? I think Riverside is #1 on the list of most polluted city in the country.

stayoutofriverside, u seem 2 know alot about Riverside. I was wondering if u knew anything about Santa Cruz?

...i mean... I know its one of the top 12 beautiful campuses nationally and the best UC campus but how is the education system there? I've began to understand that UCSC is CLEARLY the better choice compared to UCR but what about other schools?

I heard that UCSC has drastically improved during the last decade.

Unfortunately, I am no familiar enough with UCSC to comment on it. My generic advice is to choose an undergrad institution that gives you the best opportunities and is a place where you can be happy and excel academically and socially. If UCSC and UCR are your only two options, I think the choice is very clearly the former, unless there are extenuating cirumstances.

Stay out of Riverside

riverside = riversDIE

ucsc #74
ucr #81

in case your goin for the ranks

depends on what you like ... personal preference

i've heard ucr has nice dorms (new)
ucsc is like in a forest/coast/nice maybe not as good as ucsb

UCR has a terrible reputation and even though they offered me a scholarship and an invite to the honors program, I wouldn't touch it with a fifty foot stick.

Right when UCSB and Davis accepted me, i threw UCR's SIR in the trash exclaiming, "horray, I'm not going to end up at UCR" and proceeded to wait for UCI and UCSD.

As for UCSC, I didn't even apply.

yea UCR isnt the best again UC system designed to accept people give the opportunity

LOL, Riverside, LOL!

UCR might not be the best UC but its better than most state colleges in other states...

I live in Riverside and am strongly considering UCR. UCSC is also appealing. However, I'd choose UCR over UCSC for my own reasons.
My hometown may not be an La Jolla or a Westwood or a Berkeley,
yet it has it's own charms.

You guys have been bashing Riverside a bit too much. Riverside has a terrible reputation, but at least you will get a 4.0 without trying too hard. My friend who got mostly C's and D's in high school praises Riverside. He says he's been getting 3.5's.
Sure, it's the dump school for all Non-riverside UC rejects, and the city is pure junk, but there's an upside in living in such a neighborhood. People who can't fit in at any other UC and like to deal with junkies will be satisfied. And UCR is a real party school that surpasses any other UC. You might be surprised, but after you live there for a week, you might like it. And no I'm not a student there, but a lot of my friends go and they enjoy all the partying.

BuBBLES FoR SALE, u r full of sarcasm!!!.....i hope... lol

Seriously, the way u portray UCR, u make it seem like ur being completely sarcastic. If your friend, who had such low grades in HS and is doing better in UCR, thats surely a bad sign that the teaching and the curriculum isnt college level material.

Yea.... I'm guessing ur being sarcastic? lol
