I think they're trying very hard to bring it up and make it a first choice. They have a new admissions guy there named James Nondorf who was at Yale until recently. DH and DD just went to a regional talk he gave on college admissions and he was really good, made RPI seem much more appealing. They're also investing in the campus and in new programs.

RE: RPI being mostly male: Historically, men from RPI married women from Russell Sage College in Troy.
(RS upped their annual giving when they made reunion weekend the same weekend as the reunion at RPI.)

I've been impressed by RPI too. It's a safety for my son, but I wouldn't feel at all badly if he ends up there. The two kids I know there are both women, and both assured us that they weren't bothered by the ratio when we cornered them last time we saw them.

"Yes, I would mention it to comparable schools. "

so... would you guys mention it to schools that aren't comparable? and what schools ARE comparable to RPI?

One or two kids a year from D's HS go to RPI. The kids who do say they like it because it's a small school atmosphere with a lot of faculty/student interaction and community spirit.

I mentioned it to MIT. I'm @ MIT right now. Can't hurt.

Well, just the fact that an applicant can spell it has to be impressive. :) (Notice how I've managed to go two posts without attempting it).
