Road to Management Consultancy

If one wants to join a top consulting firm, how should he plan out (what a dirty phrase) college? I've being doing my research and basically got the gist that I could major in anything I want (social sciences, not economics), with the caveat that I must also do some quantitative and finance/business courses, and possibly some related club memberships. However, I'm at a LAC (considered a target school for top firms), and there's no business school conveniently attached.

Obviously, I will need a stellar GPA, one to two prestigious internships and prepare well for the case interview. But what other activities can I do to boost my chances? Must I have leadership positions or whatnot? What is the typical successful applicant and what has he accomplished before getting the job?

Personally, I was stuck on getting into only McKinsey/Bain at first, but as I looked into things a bit more, I am now pushing more-so towards Ernst & Young, or another Big4. Have a few friends that consult for Big4 and they enjoy it. Not saying don't shoot for the TOP firms, but realize that there are tons of options out there for consulting.

Why can't you do economics? Most of what McKinsey and the like do is microeconomics or some crude application of microeconomics.

I can do economics, but I'm more interested in some other subjects.
