Road Trip Help

We are looking to plan a road trip for this summer.

We will be traveling from the NYC area down to the Maryland area. I have been trying to research, but there are soooo many schools out there. He is a B student, so I am looking at schools from the book for B students.

Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone already outlined a similiar trip? He's open to rural or suburban at this point. He is interested in biology, chemistry or a combination...but who knows??

When I've planned college road trips, the first thing I do is consult my college map - Professor Pathfinder's map of US Colleges and Universities (available at Amazon and other booksellers, etc). For the B student, I recommend Colleges That Change Lives (by Loren Pope) - you can also check their website. These sources will give you a good starting point for knowing what colleges are in the area and some good LAC options. As I said, this is a starting point. You can also check older threads in the parents forum for suggestions, particularly the "Brag on a lesser-known school" thread. I think there have also been several "what options are available for my B student" threads.

Good luck!

You don't say what your S's SAT scores are. Good scores may get him into some schools that accept mostly A students. But I agree with fireflyscout -- Colleges that Change Lives is an excellent starting point. Ursinus, McDaniel, Goucher and St. Johns are Philadelphia to DC range. You might also consider Drexel U, Towson U, Salisbury U, American U, Loyola of Maryland, and St. Mary's of Maryland.

CTCL is a good place to start - - but remember tha Pope's "bias" is for small LACs. If S is interested in a larger uni setting, the book won't be of much help.

As fireflyscout suggested, search previous threads. In addition to "Brag on your lesser known school," there's a thread seeking colleges in the n'east for an average student.

And, if you're interested in going a bit farther south, there's a thread on schools in NC.

sorry wrong id

Great suggestions! He is interested in schools anywhere on the east coast. We will do the bottom half of the east coast when I get a better idea of the type of school he is interested in.

I think a small/medium school would be great for him, but he also liked Northeastern... Didn't expect that. He has only taken Psat and the Plan. I think the psat was around 1200/1250 for 2 sections and the PLan was a 28. Not sure exactly how that will translate to the actual test.

If he gets those scores on his SATs that will be very much in his favor. Drew, University of Delaware, the lesser-known Maryland publics (Towson, Salisbury, St. Marys, UMBC), Drexel, Temple. If the Bs are all in Honors/AP try Rutgers, University of Maryland CP, SUNY Stony Brook
