Roanoke College Scholars Program

Does anyone know what DD can expect with the Roanoke College on-campus scholars competition? It looks like she can choose from 5 dates to attend through Feb or March, but we're not sure what will be involved once she gets there. Merit scholarships will most likely play a big part in her college choice (given what the stock market has done to our college savings!) so we are hoping it will be a good experience.
Also, any general reviews about the college are appreciated.

Lewis1212, I never noticed that competition before. If you want an estimate on awards without going to that competition, you might look at the link below. Those awards are based on need as well as academics:

Here is the link to trip reviews of Roanoke. You can also check the “college visits” section for reviews of other schools.

Lewis,

Son was invited too.

Some great merit money available (well from little to full ride) if the kids are offered it. I suppose any merit money offered from this scholars program will be added to merit they have already received.

Only problem seems that it is a hard location to get to.

Did you find out anything more?

My son is a Junior at Roanoke and receives about $15,000/year in merit awards. He did not go to the campus scholars competition. I posted a review for Roanoke in the review section and it’s been talked about on this forum a few times. If you do a search, you’ll find more info. We’ve been very happy with his experience there.

I was also invited to the Roanoke Scholars Program.

They told me it involves a 1 hour essay writing, a 30 minute interview, and a 1 hour “group discussion.” It doesn’t sound too bad.

DogLover,
My DD went in February and she did a 1 hour essay (with prompt), 1 hour interview with a professor, then 1 hour with a general student panel that provided info, answered their ?'s. They divided the kids into 3 groups to rotate through the sessions so the small group size was manageable. While the students were busy, the parents had concurrent sessions that covered student life, curriculum, and financial aid. A luncheon was provided where they had a current scholarship winner speak, and they offered tours. There was also an optional session about the Honors program that was actually surprisingly informative (a bit different than I expected). It was all very nice and they kept it as low-key and reassuring as possible in terms of ratcheting down the “pressure” for the kids. It was obviously as much marketing on their part in addition to the scholarship competition and was an enjoyable day. We are waiting the final tally from financial aid, but at this point, Roanoke is high on my DD’s list.
