At the family weekend we were told that the majority of the out of state students are from the northeast. Son's closest friends are from CT, SC and Northern VA.

I like the emphasis on making the first year a good one. My son did the optional outdoor adventure orientation 10 days before classes started. They hiked in the Appalachian mountains, did a rope course, paddled down the James River and did a bike trip. The whole freshman class helped build a habitat for humanity house on campus for the official orientation. The first semester freshman are assigned an advisor and meet with him/her for 6 times in small groups (my son's group had 13 students) and a couple of times one-on-one. All freshman are required to do some co-curricular activites such as attending a student performance, communtity service, attending lectures the first year, kind of forcing them in a very good way to try all kinds of things on campus. They have to do so many hours of that. That sounds a little draconian but the choices are very diverse.
