Robbed while studying abroad

I wish to alert students who are going for studies abroad to be vigilant against crimes. My DD was robbed of her Iphone while she was jogging in central London. Her mistake was going through an alley for a shortcut back to her dorms at Trafalgar Square. Someone followed her and demanded her Iphone which she was using to listen to music and her money. Fortunately she didn't have a wallet on her so she just handed her Iphone over and she wasn't harmed.

Her classmate and good friend who was studying in Buenos Aires was dragged into a car, beaten and forced to withdraw money from several ATMs around the area. Fortunately, she wasn't more severely harmed.

I know these incidents can happen anywhere but sometimes the victims can be marked more easily because your clothes, appearance identify you as a foreigner and therefore more vulnerable.

D had friends who were robbed (one twice) while she was abroad in Ecuador. Another friend was in Ghana for only three weeks when her group, coming home one evening from the movies, was held up with machete and gun bearing individuals. Yes, students do need to be more vigilant. Often they are while in the states because they know which areas to avoid and what to look for. Going abroad is new territory in more ways that one.
