Robert Byrd sch. for 2007

Anyone have a link to the Ohio recipients??

Here is Ohio.
http://www.ode.state.oh.us/gd/templates/pages/ODE/ODEDetail.aspx?Page=3&TopicRelationID=997&Content=29982

Midwestparent, the criteria vary by state. In Texas, the student fills out a very basic application with their stats and submits it to their school. The school narrows down the nominees, and forwards their recommendations to the state. After that, it's a mystery who does the selecting. The selection is based on GPA, rank, and test scores.

My son just received a letter letting him know that he didn't get it...but of course, I had already found the link of winners. In Missouri they had over 800 applicants...all of which had to be in the 90th percentile or above on the ACT. All that had to be entered was unweighted GPA and your ACT score. He had a 31 on the ACT and their website said that that last year 32 was the lowest score of recipients of the scholarship.

Midwestparent, congrats to your daughter (and you!) and to your nephew!! We were hoping but I knew it was stiff competition.

I'm from NY and I applied through my school...the guidance counselors did the math to see who from our class was eligible and then asked those students to fill out apps (three of us).

The NYS higher ed site says this:

Applicants will be ranked within their county of legal residence based on a final ranking score composed of 75 percent for their GPA and 25 percent for their SAT test score.

So it is very by-the-numbers, and in NY at least, based on counties.

Does anyone have a link to the names of Oregon winners?

Thanks for the Ohio link - weird, my D attends public school and there were no winners in our county from our large public school system.

abasket...I know what you mean. There are 9 public school districtss, 2 private school districtss in our county and only one winner from one school. Thats why I was wondering how this one works.

Applied in SC, didn't get it. Oh well. Life goes on.

orjr, I searched but couldn't find a list of Oregon winners.

Thanks for trying, entomom. I'm disappointed because it sounds like the Oregon folks on this board have heard, and my son was told by his GC that he would likely get it -- but he hasn't received any mail. I think it looks like he can check this one off. Maybe good news from another front will come in.
Congrats to those who qualified in their districts.
This is an oldie but goodie, I got this one in Tennessee when I was a kid a million years ago :)

orjr,
According to this website, they Oregon Byrd scholarships haven't been released yet. So, maybe there's still a chance they haven't notified everyone yet?? Good luck to you and your son!

got one in west virginia a few weeks ago. :D

Does anyone know whether Byrd Scholarships are even being funded? Apparently Pres. Bush completely cut the program out of his FY2007 and FY2008 budgets, and the Minnesota DOE website says "As of April 26, 2007, the federal appropriation for this program has not been made. As soon as the appropriation is received and processed, our office will notify all applicants of the results for this year by letter." Did Congress restore funding? Does anyone even know what periods FY2007 and FY2008 refer to? I seem to remember something about the federal fiscal year starting Oct. 1st, which if true, further muddies the water since it doesn't correspond with school year dates.

I'm completely stumped regarding where Byrd is in the appropriations/budget process and which school years are affected. Initially MN applicants were told that they would hear by the end of the school year, and now it seems like it's more vague.

So why are other states giving notification if the appropriation hasn't been made? Are these letters saying the scholarship is contingent on funding? Or has funding been approved, but the appropriation just not made?

Again, has anyone on the East Coast (particularly New York or even the New England region) heard? No one I know has yet, and I'd like to find out as soon as possible!

Michigan

Principals have been notified and will be annoucing the winners at their school. Students will receive notification in about two weeks.

Update on New York, in case it's helpful to anyone else:

Letters of notification to winners will be sent by the end of this week. Good luck to everyone!

Anyone heard in Texas?

My D got a Byrd scholarship in Texas 3 years ago - and it said "contingent on funding". I know it always gets deposited into her account late (say October or Nov?) for fall semester, and a little late for spring. I imagine that if funding is not approved for the 07-08 year, she will not get the money from the gov. (But, her U will pick it up, since they meet 100% of need, and the grant is part of her need/merit FA package.) States may very well determine winners, even if funding is not yet secured (and may not be secured! Iraq is expensive .. and futile.. :( )

Amen to that!
