Is there not going to be a scholarship this year? According to the website, Congress had decided not to fund this scholarship for the FY2012.

My d’s had it the past two years (in FL). We received email notification a couple of months ago (official word) that congress did not fund it, and she would not be getting the scholarship this year. And with Bright Futures decreasing another 15% and tuition going up 15%, the wallet’s taking a bigger hit this fall that’s for sure.

zebes

alright then. that sucks. thanks, though.

I THINK Every state might handle it differently. They DO administer the funds differently. I also saw this notation. My child is a sophomore this year and I thought she wouldn’t get it at all. In Indiana, she DID end up getting it, but at a reduced amount $1200 versus $1500. No clue if they work of last year’s funds and therefore have the remainder to distribute, or if the state kicked in (hah!), etc. The notation on OUR state site DID say that there would be no NEW scholarships. But, in Indiana you must “reapply” each year. So…I didn’t know if that meant she’d be considered new or not. Geesh…and I didn’t think times could GET much harder. Prices of EVERYTHING are skyrocketing, but aid is dropping. What a lousy time to be a college student. Oh well, when I was 18…I couldn’t afford to go AT ALL. So…?

Just received a letter from Georgia that they will pay renewals this year only. S is very thankful.

I just got a letter from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction congratulating me and saying that the state has enough money left over from last year to award “300 new Robert C. Byrd Scholars a one-time scholarship of $750.00 for the fall 2011 semester.”

Illinos is funding at a reduced rate this year of $1020.00. No new scholarships however, only renewals, and this is likely to be the last year for the renewal.

Legislation was signed on April 14, 2011 by President Obama to continue funding the federal government for this federal fiscal year. Additionally, that legislation included language to terminate funding for several programs, including the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program. As a result, this scholarship will not be available to new and previous Byrd Scholars for the 2011-2012 academic year. Unfortunately the program is also scheduled to be totally eliminated in 2012.

BIG boo. At least I got one year…
