Robert C. Byrd scholarship

hopefully there’s still money for it next year… but that’s an interesting question brown14 because that’d be a little weird to use federal money at a school in another country… but still definitely worth looking into

ughhh i guess id better call. i really hope its renewable too

^it is renewable. good luck!

I’m 99% sure that you have to go to school in NYS in order to use the funding.

so u cant use the money to study in canada…or even another state?

I’m sorry I misspoke. I forgot that it wasn’t just a NYS scholarship; it is a federally funded state- administered scholarship. So you can only use the scholarship if you go to school in the state that you reside. A.K.A: not for use in Canada.

You definitely can use the money to study in another state. I’d bet you couldn’t use it in another country, but I haven’t seen anything definite yet.

I could be wrong. It’s just that my counselor wouldn’t let certain kids apply because they were already accepted out of state.

I could very well be to, sorry if I sounded definitive. The wording on the federal website isn’t clear at all:

“Scholarships are awarded to individuals who apply in their state or area for a period of not less than one or more than four years during the first four years of study at any institution of higher education eligible to participate in the program”

[Awards – Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program](http://www2.ed.gov/programs/iduesbyrd/awards.html)

Here’s something I find about the Minnesota process that’s clearer, but I don’t know if it’s reputable:

“seniors who are residents of Minnesota. Resident seniors attending high schools outside the state are also eligible if they have the principal’s endorsement.”

“Recipients may attend any accredited postsecondary institution in the United States.”

[Federal Robert C. Byrd Scholarship for High School Students](Robert C. Byrd Scholarship for High School Students | Get Ready for College: Insiders Guide to College Degrees and Financial Aid)

Ok, I think I found a better, clear source. When you complete the student form in my state, after you’ve been nominated, it’s on an official website and after login has this information:

“__________ Federal Robert C. Byrd Scholarship recipients are chosen by a committee of school administrators with equal representation from each congressional district. Recipients are chosen based on their overall grade point averages and ACT/SAT test score. Pending full funding at the federal level, Byrd scholarships may provide a scholarship of $1,500 per year for up to four years. The student may use this scholarship at any post-secondary educational institution in the United States.”
and later
“Students are not required to attend a post-secondary educational institution in __________.”

So, at least for my state, funding can be used OOS, but not in Canada.

You APPLY to compete within your own state. Different amounts of funding are provided to each state, and the scholarship competition operates differently/is awarded differently within each state.

But, once each state awards THEIR awards to their residents…the monetary award itself can be used to attend a college in ANY state, regardless of where you live/where you applied/received the scholarship.

R124687: so I can put on the app my college as UCI and ultimately go to UCLA and still receive the money?

I don’t think they care where you go to school

I got a letter from PHEAA stating that I am eligible, and in May a committee will meet and determine who receives the scholarship. Does anyone know of somebody who has won in Pennsylvania? I’m interested in seeing the stats of the winners.

I just got notification that I received this scholarship. From the letter, it appears that it is funded through this year. It states “you will receive the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship in the amount of $1500.”

Later, it says "The scholarship may be renewable for three years after the initial award on the condition that adequate funding is provided by the federal government. These funds are provided by the Higher Education and Opportunity Act of 2008. Many program rescissions and revisions are occurring at the federal level. We maintain close contact with Washington on this important issue.

So, I think that we will get the money this fall. The next few are the ones up in the air. Otherwise they would say something like “pending funding from the federal government,” right??

I know my state notifies really early, so good luck to those who are gonna be waiting it out awhile longer!

10scholar, what state are you in?

i sent you a pm

I’m from Wisconsin, they’ve notified, I received one.

How about Connecticut, anyone heard anything?

Has anyone heard from Louisiana?
