Check your email! WOOHOO!! Who else is going to the weekend?! Good luck to all you CCers!

wow congrats!

me too!!!!!!!!!!!!! whoooo!!

congrats (10 char.)

I didn't get it. I croaked on the interview big time. I could just cry. Best to all. I'm glad to Astrophysics Mom for reminding me early in the process that the campus visit occurs right over Spring Break. I'm going to Colorado to ski!!!! Hot tubs!! Shopping!!! I never liked Duke anyway, and I'm not saying that out of spite.

Hey, powderpuff, I'm sorry about that. The questions were definitely difficult, and you seem like a bubbly person so I bet you'll be happy where ever you end up. And, y'know, I'll be happier with you going to UNC than Duke. I have to admit I'm a strong tarheel. Do you know where you're going?

You're not alone, Powderpuff. I'm afraid my S was let down after his interview with the Robertson woman because he felt like he choked. He is pretty humble and does not like talking about himself. He got the bad news email yesterday too. Unlike him because he is an excellent public speaker, but not so much on the phone (I blame AIM for the generational lack of phone comfort). I think he feels that he failed at developing a rapport with her. Its a shame, he was really high on UNC, even after getting a UVA likely. He wouldn't give us any details because he doesn't want to talk about it. I guess these things are a double edged sword. You get excited, get your hopes up and then a huge letdown. He still got Honors and plans to visit, but I think merit $ would have made a big difference in his decision. Now we're not sure who to cheer for in the ACC tourney!

Haha, when in doubt, root for UNC. They might actually win.

RelaxDad,
Thanks for sharing that with me, at least I don't feel so alone. You know, today they overnight FedEx'd me my rejection......come on now, is that necessary?! I burned it. Really.
I've used this analogy before: "why do you build me up, buttercup, just to let me down"? Although I will probably go to UNC, this scholarship stuff has me NOT feeling so totally in love with the place. Though, in my mind, I am trying to separate the Robertson people from Carolina because I know (or at least think so) that they are not one in the same.
Your son should be VERY proud of his likely letter from UVA!!! I really like UVA too, but I don't have a likely letter. I like their campus, and that they appear to have decided to keep the scholarship game to a minimum.
I'm looking forward to the ACC too! I'll be thinking about you all!

they sent you a fed-exed rejection? ouchhhh thats so wrong. :-( what the heck did it say??

powderpuff, your amazing anyway. keep your eyes on UVA...perhaps that will be a good option since UNC isnt showing you the love...which they are dumb not to. both are INCREDIBLE schools.

and bear in mind, when God closes a door, he opens a window.
its the truest thing in the world.

Powderpuff,
How could a young person like you know that very old song?
I hope you end up at UVA....that's a school my daughter has applied to.
Good luck with the whole process.

Yeah powderpuff best of luck. Not that you need it--anyone who made Robertson semifinalist must be very well-qualified.

powderpuff

The Robertson, just like the Morehead is separate from the normal UNC admission and financial aid process, so as you believed, they are NOT the same people. The only real difference operationally between the two scholarships is that you can submit a form during routine admissions process to express interest in the Robertson whereas only in staters can self nominate for the Morehead.

Both scholarships are incredibly competitive and even making it to semifinalist status is quite an honor. Don't let the Robertson news sour you on UNC, it's a great place that can give you a terrific education and an amazing undergraduate experience to go with it.

powderpuff... I felt the same way about the morehead people... I dealt with it by telling my parents giving 85% would have gotten me just as far... lol illogical i know

powderpuff,
I hear what you're saying about the buildup and then letdown souring the process. My son was excited about UVA as he made it through 2 rounds of Jefferson Scholar interviews - then he was cut. Receiving his likely letter to UVA didn't seem to excite him.

Saw a similar situation with UNC. Was very excited by UNC's likely letter (1st school he heard from) but then when he was passed over for merit $ - he seemed "defeated - rejected."

It's hard to figure this system out. Some equally (or even higher ranked schools) have offered large merit awards but as it turns out, he doesn't want to cross off UNC (or UVA) - he just doesn't feel good about these choices as he once did - like somehow they rejected him even while accepting him.

powderpuff,

It is always disappointing to not come out on top in a competitive competition.

However, rather than looking at as if you have somehow lost, try to see how much everyone must think of you and your accomplishments to even put you in a position where you had the opportunity to interview from the scholarship. Realize also that the fact that you were not awarded a scholarship is not a reflection on you or an indication that those who were are somehow better qualified. It was simply a matter that there are not as many scholarships as there are qualified applicants. Some pretty arbitrary and subjective distinctions are made that may, or may not, result in the best applicants being awarded the scholarship.

Don't feel bad. You might just have to work harder than most. But a wise person once said... your hard work will never go unrewarded. Keep that in mind.

Wow! What an outpouring of emotion!! Thank you, thank you all! I don't really know any of you personally, but I have received such nice vibes on this site and on my private message site. You know that must say a lot about the folks interested in Carolina.
I'm still really high on Chapel Thrill. It's really not about the $. I did get an academic award of $2,500 from them on scholarship day, and I've been accepted into the Honors Program. That's cool;
it's better than a poke in the eye with a stick! Sure, right.
I'd be a fool to pass up on the quality and price of Carolina.
3TNVOLS: The "Buttercup" song is played at the end of a cult film called "Something About Mary", a Cameron Diaz film with Ben Stillar that came out a few years ago. It's real funny, and I guess I never knew that the Buttercup song was old! It does suit my feelings quite well at this time.
Thanks to all

GetOuttaBuffalo,
Thanks for your kind words, but I had to giggle when you started quoting lines that the nuns say in The Sound of Music!! Next they break into song: "Climb every mountain, search high and low........follow every rainbow"..........
3TNVOLS: yes, this is old, but I'm a movie fan!!
Just teasing with you GOOB! Lot's of fun! Hoping to see you on Franklin Street some day!

Powderpuff
Our S got the same rejection FedEx. A little salt in the wound after the email. Hopefully, they will change that part. At least you got some Merit $. That's nothing to sneeze at! I'm also sure that you have other irons in the fire and no doubt one of them will thrill you. The next few months are going to be very thrilling for you kids with acceptances, school awards, Proms, dinners, etc., etc.
We geezers envy you... Enjoy it!
